“See?Not very selfless, am I?”

He studied me for a moment.“If you were selfish, you would have said you wanted to save yourself.I will go and help you save your nephew.”

When he would have turned, I held out a hand to stop him.

“Thank you. When we get there, I’ll try to help you identify the people who are likely to screw you over.”

“Explain.”

“People who would trick you into believing one thing while doing something you’re not going to like.”

He grunted, which I wasn’t sure how to take.He was still hard to read.

“We’ll leave tomorrow morning,” I said.“See you at dinner?”

He nodded then stayed where he was as I started back.It felt like he was the parent watching to make sure their kid got on the bus safely. When I reached the barn, I turned and waved. He lifted his hand in return and then disappeared into the trees.

Staring at the body pile, I hoped I’d made the right choice in telling him the truth about what might wait for him at Irwin.Patrick was right to think that Molev might be a risk. But in my mind, the risk didn’t outweigh the potential salvation.

The day passed quietly into evening, and when Molev returned for dinner, he had a new bite on his arm.Roni offered to clean it for him and take out the stitches that seemed overdue for removal.

He looked at me for a long moment before agreeing.

“I think he was hoping you’d offer to protect him,” Katie said with a grin.

Each and every night, Roni invited Molev into her bed.He would turn her down, and she’d just grin, wink, and say she’d check again later like it was all a big game to her.I suspected it probably was.Just like I was pretty sure those invitations were why Molev waited until she was sleeping before lying down and closing his eyes.

“I’d be terrified of getting head from her too,” Ted said.“I wouldn’t be able to tell if I’d get the growl or bite.I’d rather be with someone who’s not all teeth and claws.”He gave Katie a playful look and blew her a kiss.

She flushed and turned away from him.The group chuckled.I said nothing. After all the time we’d spent together, I knew that Katie liked Ted.Timing and circumstance were the only things keeping her from taking him up on his offers.

I wondered if that was the same for Roni and Molev.

“Andie, make sure Roni stays on task,” Patrick said with a nod down the hall.“Group meeting when they’re done.”

I left the kitchen and found Roni and Molev in the bathroom. She was kneeling between his legs as he sat on the closed toilet seat. The towel around his waist wouldn’t have done much to stop her advances if she hadn’t been focused on picking out the stitches.

“I’m glad you at least said yes to this,” Roni said to him.“They were already growing in.”

He grunted and looked up at me.His eyes appeared more green than yellow in this light. And not nearly as scary as they once had been.

“Patrick wants everyone to meet in the kitchen as soon as you’re done,” I said, shifting my attention to Roni.

“Hell yeah,” she said, understanding what a group meeting meant.“Took him long enough.”

She looked up at Molev and nudged his knee to get his attention.

“Our time might be severely limited now.Keep that in mind next time I ask.”

He grunted, and I fought not to smile at Roni’s disappointed expression.

Sighing, she went back to picking out the remaining stitches.Once the last one pulled free, she set the scissors aside and slipped her hand under his towel along his inner thigh.

He jolted back, and she grinned.

“For both our sakes, I really hope you’re coming before we leave.”

She rose quickly and sauntered away as he slowly stood.
