“Are many women like her?”he asked, staring at the empty hallway.

“I can honestly say I’ve never witnessed a woman openly grabbing a man like that. So, I don’t think there are many like her.Are you okay?Want me to tell her that she’s gone too far?”

His gaze met mine, and he blinked at me.

“Can I sleep near you again tonight?”he asked instead of answering.

I couldn’t stop my amused grin.“Sure.I’ll keep you safe.”

“Thank you.”

Giving him privacy to get dressed, I returned to the kitchen.Since the space was already filling, I leaned against the wall near the hallway and watched the rest of my team.

Ted teased Katie.Tom added his commentary to whatever conversation was going on.Derek laughed and nudged Mateo.Any other observer would likely say they acted like family. And they did, in a way.But they also held themselves back from each other. Not to the degree that I held myself back but enough. And they were smart for doing it.

I looked at Steve and noted his momentary vacant stare until he caught himself and laughed with Tom.When my gaze shifted to Sid’s, I saw he’d been watching Steve, too.He looked at me and nodded slightly before observing the others in the group. He’d had to pull the trigger on more than his share of turned teammates, and I could see the toll it took on him.The toll it took on us all.

Patrick set a radio on the table—so the guards on the roof could hear too—and glanced at me.I checked the hallway, saw Molev striding my way, and nodded to Patrick.

The moment Molev stood beside me, Patrick turned on the radio. His gaze swept the room as he started to speak.

“Four weeks ago, we left our families and friends on a seemingly impossible mission: Find a solution to the sickness killing humanity.”

Patrick’s gaze landed on Molev.“When we set out, looking for the creatures who unleashed this hell on us, we thought you were the enemy. Will you return to our leaders with us and tell them what you told us?Will you help save what’s left of us?”

Patrick was more straightforward than I thought he’d be with Molev, and it relieved me a little.

Molev glanced at me.

“I will share what I know with your leaders.”

“Thank you,” Patrick said.“Then we leave at first light.”

“Please tell me we’re going back to Vance for an airlift,” Tom said.

“We go back the same way we arrived.Any other questions? No?Good,” he said without pause.“Rest up.Tomorrow, we go home.”

He stood and left the kitchen, and the rest of the team broke apart.

Roni winked at Molev and motioned with her head that he should follow.

“Perhaps there is another you can find worthy of your companionship,” Molev said in response.

“No one that would measure up to you.But don’t worry.I’m not giving up hope.It took us three weeks to reach you. It’ll take us at least three weeks to return. We’ll have time to change your mind.”

She strolled away, and Molev stared after her.

I watched him, trying to read what he might be thinking. He caught me staring when he turned back to me.

“Have you ever offered yourself to a male?”he asked.

“Not like that.Roni’s very open.”

He grunted and started for the door.“I will return.”

Once he went outside, I searched for Patrick, who was looking at the maps with Sean.

“Where’s our friend?”Patrick asked.
