“He went outside.Roni hit on him again.”

“Tell her to ease up.We don’t want her scaring him off.”

“I don’t think that’s going to happen. If I were to guess, their females obviously don’t behave like Roni.He didn’t seem offended.Just confused.Like he’s still trying to figure us out.I imagine there are a lot of things we do that he finds confusing. For example, not calling for a ride out of here like Tom said.”

“Does Molev fully trust us?”Patrick asked.

“I doubt it.I wouldn’t if I were him.”

“Then it’s understandable that I still have reservations.I won’t hand-deliver him to what remains of our people until I’m sure of his intentions.Would you?”

I tried imagining Molev meeting Zion.My four-year-old nephew would be terrified. So would Rachel, my sister-in-law.But how I thought Molev would act was more important.I didn’t think he’d go on a killing spree or call in the dogs.Yet, I wasn’t entirely sure of what he would do.

“Your hesitation is my answer,” Patrick said.“We’ll use the time it’ll take us to reach our destination wisely.Get to know him and give him a better chance to get to know us.”

I didn’t like the answer but understood it.We’d lost so many of our number to get to where we were and the odds weren’t good for everyone who remained.Yet, I wouldn’t risk anyone else’s life back home to save my own. That was the exact opposite reason I’d signed up for this mission.

With a nod of acknowledgment, I left the room and went outside to watch the moon rise from the roof with Sid.Since Molev started sleeping next to me, I hadn’t had to pull a night shift.I didn’t feel too guilty about it.Due to his daily patrols, there wasn’t a lot of action at night, so guard duty was lighter than usual.Plus, Molev didn’t sleep the whole night and always took over for whoever was on top the barn.

But I missed the night sky. With so little light pollution now, it glowed with those millions of distant suns, and nothing was prettier.

Sid nodded to me when I appeared at the top of the ladder.Neither of us spoke for several minutes after I sat next to him. While he studied our surroundings with his night vision binoculars, I soaked in the view of the stars.

“He went into the barn and hasn’t come back out,” Sid said softly. Then he glanced at me.“Ted and Katie went in there first.”

I tore my gaze from the sky to consider the barn.Hadn’t I just told Patrick that Molev was still trying to figure us out?Katie and Ted probably weren’t the best case study for a normal relationship.

Resigned, I went to the ladder and descended.

It wasn’t hard to find Molev.I simply followed the sound of Katie and Ted going at it like screech monkeys.

Molev leaned against some big piece of machinery, arms crossed and openly watching Ted’s hips thrusting like mad as Katie dug her heels into his thighs. They were so oblivious that they didn’t even notice him.But I knew Katie well enough to know she wouldn’t like it.

So I tapped his arm to gain his attention then motioned for him to follow me.I stopped just outside the barn doors.

“I understand that you don’t know all the rules we follow in our culture, but watching people have sex isn’t okay for most people.Don’t ever tell Katie you saw her doing that.”

He grunted.

“Can I ask why you were watching?”

“I listened to a book that described sex.I wanted to know if it was telling the truth.”

I stared at him for a very long moment, digesting what that meant.

“Molev, you said you lived thousands of years.”

“I have.”

“Are you saying you’ve never had sex?”

He glanced back through the barn door. The feel of his hand pressing against my lower back only startled me for a second before he moved me away from the entrance and toward the house.

“They are finished,” he said softly.

“Does that mean you’re not going to answer my question?”

He glanced at me from the corner of his eye.
