If Molev were a human, I would have said it was a cover to hide his weakened state. But based on the mistrustful look he gave the medic as he showed us the way, I saw the gesture for what it was.A sign of his trust in me.

Molev didn’t walk as slowly as he had getting into the MRAP that morning. But he sure wasn’t jogging like he usually did.He kept his pace steady as we wound our way through the building to an empty room with two military-grade twin beds.

“Sorry it’s not better,” the medic said.

“It’s fine,” Molev said.

The door closed behind us, and Molev released my hand.I thought he’d collapse onto his bed.Instead, he pushed them together.

“Rest, Andie.”

“I’m only lying down if you promise not to get up until I do.”

He grunted.

“I’m not taking that for an answer this time.I want your word for two reasons.First, we’re in a new place, and I don’t trust them not to shoot at you.And second, you need some real sleep Molev.Please.”

“I promise not to leave this room without you.”

I’d take it.

Leaving my boots on, I got into bed and watched him ease himself onto the other mattress. His feet hung off the end as he settled onto his stomach. We watched each other for a long moment.

“You will lose many more people if Patrick doesn’t request an air evacuation,” he said finally.

“We know,” I said.

“Did I not prove he can trust me with your lives?”

“You did.But he’s not ready to trust you with the safety of the rest of humanity.”

“Explain.”

“He still suspects you’re waiting to see where we’re going so you can tell the rest of your people and kill us all.”

Molev snorted and closed his eyes.

“I already know where he plans to take me.We head west to Fort Irwin.”

“How do you know?”I asked.

“I’ve known since the beginning when I overheard your conversation.”

“Before we knew you had good hearing,” I said with sudden insight.

“Yes.”

“I’ll tell him you know.”

“He needs to save the females,” he said just before his breathing evened out.

Save the females.

With a growing understanding of what he would do to protect the resource he sought, I stared at Molev’s gauze-covered back.He would do anything.Give anything.Even his life.

In that way, we were very alike.I’d already committed my life to seeing Zion reunited with my brother and niece in the safe zone. And I would do anything, even put my faith in Molev, to see that happen.

Exhaling heavily, I closed my eyes.
