“Go get some rest or food or whatever it is you need.I want my bed back and some shut-eye.”

Molev moved a few inches to the side, his way of telling Patrick to go ahead.I could see Patrick didn’t like it by the way he brushed past Molev.

Then the grey giant stepped out of Patrick’s room and closed the door behind him, a complete dismissal of Patrick and his authority.

“Do your people have any kind of chain of command?”I asked him.

“They do.”

And based on how Molev behaved with Patrick, I had a feeling Molev was probably near the top.But I didn’t ask, preferring ignorance.I couldn’t share or withhold what I didn’t know.

“What do you need?”I asked.“More sleep?Food?Something to drink?”

“Sleep,” Molev said.

We returned to our room, leaving Cody and Tamra in the hall.

Molev didn’t move to the bed but watched me.

“Were you able to hear what Patrick and I discussed when we left?”

He nodded.

“I don’t know which way Patrick will go, but I hope he chooses to trust you and orders the airlift out of here.”

“And if he doesn’t?”

“Then I guess you leave, and we’ll head back to Parsons and hope another one of your people will be willing to help us.”

He studied me for a long moment.

“Are you tired, Andie?”

“Over the last several weeks, I’ve learned to sleep when I can.So, tired or not, if you lie down, I’ll join you.”

He grunted and moved to lower himself to the bed.I was two seconds behind him.

“Will you tell me about your life before the earthquakes?”he asked, watching me.

“There’s not a whole lot to tell.I wasn’t interested in college after high school. So I got a job at a coffee shop for a while and saved enough to get to Europe.I worked in coffee shops there, exploring and saving money to get to the next place.People interested me.I liked learning new things and about different cultures. When my brother called and told me his wife was pregnant, I came back.I didn’t want to miss my chance to be the cool aunt.”

“Why did you never settle with a male and have children of your own?”

Since he’d already asked something similar, he either hadn’t fully understood my previous answer or was asking something else.

“I’ve dated, but I never liked anyone enough to spend the rest of my life with them. They were fun to be with while they were interested and easy to say goodbye to when someone else caught their eye.”

“I don’t understand human males,” he said, closing his eyes.“I would never lose interest in you.”

“That’s nice of you to say, but you don’t know me.I’ve been called an emotional robot before.I tend not to open up to people.”

His arm slipped over my waist.

“It sounds like they were never the right people.”

“You might be right. Now get some sleep.Who knows how long we’ve got?”

I closed my eyes and took my own advice.
