When I woke again, Molev’s arm was still over my waist. This time, I checked my watch without guilt.Another four hours had passed.

“Are you hungry?”Molev asked.

“Not really.I think I want to get up and move around for a while though. How about you?”

He sat up with much more ease than the last time.

“How’s everything feeling?”

“Good.”

Yet when he turned his back to me, I saw a few spots on his white bandages that were dotted with blood.

“We might need to have the medic look at your stitches again.Looks like a few are bleeding.”

“They will heal.”

My gaze slid over the patchwork of scarring on his chest, and I realized how unimportant a few pulled stitches probably were to him.

“Ready to go for a walk then?”I asked.

He opened the door, drawing Cody and Tamra’s attention.

“Anything happen while we were sleeping?”I asked.

“A few people came by and looked at your door, but that was it,” Tamra said.

“Where are you going?”Cody asked.

“Just stretching our legs.”

They fell in step behind us as we made our way to the latrine then the mess.Since it was the middle of the night, there wasn’t much food out, but I did raid the leftovers and handed Molev a tin sheet filled with hotdogs.

The halls were quiet, which I didn’t find comforting.Recalling our path earlier, I made our way to the exit and stepped outside. The night sky was lit with the stars that peeked through clouds.I paused and took a moment to just take it in.

Molev crumpled the tinfoil, adding sound to the silence.

I glanced his way to tell him what to do with his wrapper, but his gaze jumped from me to the distant fence.I couldn’t see anything, but he slowly nudged me back toward the door.

“Wake Patrick,” he said softly.

When he would have pushed me inside, I caught his arm.

“We stick together.”

He glanced at the darkness again, then hurried inside. We ran down the halls, and Molev pulled ahead when we reached the hall that held Patrick’s door.Molev didn’t bother knocking but burst in.

“Patrick.”

The boom of Molev’s voice startled Patrick awake. He sat up, still fully dressed.

“There are three or more hounds to the north.”

Cody and I swore, and Tamra paled.Patrick stood and started moving.

“Gear up,” he barked.

“No,” Molev said.“I cannot kill them.If we stay, you will all die.”
