“This end of the base is darker,” she said, her gaze never leaving the door.

We waited, listening to the yelling and the gunfire as it grew louder.Closer.

The soldier didn’t flinch when the door opened with a bang.Roni, Katie, and Steve came in at a run, turned, and took a knee, weapons up and ready at the open door.I tried moving to see what or who they were waiting for, but Molev caught me around the waist and held me immobile.

“Move!Move!Move!”came from outside, but I didn’t recognize the voice.

“Stay here,” Molev said. Then he was gone out the door.

“Shit,” Steve breathed.“Did you see that?”

Roland, Sid, and Brandon ran in with base personnel.

Those people went to the helicopter and started doing their thing as Brandon came over to me.

“Once we open the bay, we’ll need to move fast.Half the lights are out, and the undead are going after the rest.”

His voice rang in the abrupt silence.

We both looked at the door.Molev strode in, his arms and torso painted dark red.Patrick was two steps behind him.

“A squad is in position to hold the hangar. How soon until we’re in the air?”

I looked back at the men who were moving something with wheels in front of the helicopter wheels.

“As soon as we tow it clear of the hangar,” one of the men said.

“Get this door open and get it done,” Patrick said.

Molev stopped beside me as a man ran over and used the controls to start opening the bay.

“Are you okay?I asked.“It looks like you have a few new bites.”

“Yes.”

“How are the stitches holding up?”

“Well enough,” he said.

“I hope so.”

The noise of the opening bay door carried through the building.I heard a few distant pops outside.

An infected darted under the growing gap.A shot to the head took it down.Another infected came running and was dropped just as quickly. They were going for the men operating the thing they meant to use to move the helicopter.

Molev saw the same thing I did.

“Stay here, Andie.”

He left me with Brandon. When I saw he was going to go out the hangar door, though, I didn’t stay put.I swore under my breath and jogged to the other side of the hangar, using the edge of the door as cover as I watched for infected from the other direction.Brandon joined me, taking a knee.

We shot what we saw as long as Molev was clear. He moved wickedly fast, beheading infected as he kept them away from the ground crew.As the helicopter emerged from the bay, we moved with it, shooting down the infected.

I saw Cody.He shambled forward the way a newly turned would.Someone shot him.

The sound of an engine starting didn’t bring any relief. There were so many infected coming around the side of the building that I couldn’t look away, never mind trying to get to the aircraft.

They came like a never-ending wave, rushing our position.
