“An hour,” Patrick said.“And we haven’t heard a single howl. What was the point of this?Did you want to see our response time? The number of personnel? What?”

“I wanted to warn you that I heard hounds.”

The older man’s expression hardened.“We’re running low on sleep and patience.I don’t give a damn if you’re the next Christ or the devil incarnate. You pull this shit again, and I’ll toss you out those gates so fast you’ll—”

We all heard the howl even through the closed door.

“Order the airlift,” Molev said.

“That takes time we don’t have,” the other man said before looking at Patrick.“You said he killed two?”

“He did.”

“Good.”The man’s gaze swung to Molev.“Do it again.”

“He barely survived what he did with two, and you’re asking him to take on three or more?”I said before Molev could react.“If he, the one who can kill them, says run, we should run.”

I could see in the other man’s eyes that I’d crossed a line.

“Evacuation isn’t an option,” Patrick said.“Too many personnel.”

“We only need to save one, Patrick,” I said.“Our mission hasn’t changed.”

A smattering of gunfire echoed distantly, adding to the urgency of the moment, but the only reaction in the group was Molev’s side glance at me.

Patrick finally looked at the other man.“Make it happen.”

The muted sounds escalated the moment the door opened. The other man made it out two steps before something rushed him from the side and knocked him out of view.

My hand went to my sidearm, drawing it without thought.

Molev blocked me again when I tried to move forward.

“Behind me,” he said.

“Head right outside the door,” Patrick said from behind me.“The hangar is on the other side of the base.I’ll find the pilot and meet you there.”

“Stay close,” Molev said a second before we were moving.

As soon as I cleared the door, I saw the infected the man was fighting. He moved his gun to the side of its head and pulled the trigger.Blood didn’t spatter me because of Molev’s quick reflexes.

Staring at Molev’s broad back, I heard the man say, “Make this mean something,” before there was another report. When Molev stepped aside, the bite mark on the man’s face explained why he’d pulled the trigger on himself.

“Move,” Patrick barked.

Molev swept me into his arms and looked down at me.“Turn your face.”

Then he was running at an incredible speed.I heard infected call out in every direction. Some close. Some farther away.He didn’t pause, but I could feel him veer as I pressed my face to his chest.

We reached the hangar a few moments later.Molev paused, adjusting his hold on me, and opened the door. The metal structure did nothing to mute the chaos outside.

Molev placed me on my feet, his hand steadying me, as my eyes adjusted to the bright overhead lights.A woman stood near the helicopter, her firearm ready and pointed at us.

“We have orders to evacuate this man,” I said, stepping in front of Molev.“He’s immune to their bite and might hold the key to a vaccine.Sergeant Bromwell is trying to locate the pilot. Is that you?”

“No.Away from the door.Take cover by the tail. There’s a back door, but it’s already blocked.”

A howl echoed nearby.
