“How soon do we get our tickets out of here?”Sid asked.

“On behalf of the United States and the world, we thank you for your service and sacrifice to escort…Molev here.Due to your extended time in the field, you will need to undergo a period of observation and testing before we can—”

“My ticket isn’t for me,” I said.

“Mine either,” Roland said.

Everyone nodded in agreement.

“I understand.I will send someone to your assigned housing to take down the names of the people you are sending in your place.”

He looked at the guard Molev tossed.“Please see that they reach their assigned housing safely.”

Then the general met my gaze again.“For Molev’s safety, he should remain in the house.Let the guards outside know if you require anything.”

Molev made a sound that wasn’t quite a grunt or a snort but somewhere in between.

“Do not mistake my cooperation for compliance.I am not your prisoner. If you care for my safety and that of your people, warn them not to point their weapons at me.”

The skin at the edge of the general’s collar turned red.The flush slowly crept upward as Molev dismissed the man by turning his back on him.

I met Molev’s gaze as he indicated I should lead the way.It didn’t escape my notice that he was putting himself between me and the soldiers, and his first demand echoed in my mind again.

I want Andie.

We got a ride from the hospital. This time in a vehicle big enough to accommodate all of us.Even our escort.

No one said anything until we were back in the house.

“What the fuck was that?”Sid asked as soon as the door closed.

“What part?”I asked, removing my riot gear.“The part where they were observing us with a poorly hidden two-way mirror?Or the part where I saw they had the equivalent of an electric chair in the testing room?”

“My vote is the part where Molev asked for women,” Roni said.“That one really has me curious.”

Sid paused his angry pacing.“Yeah, I’m curious about that. But it was the general’s attempt to put off our evac with ‘observation and testing’ that I’m questioning.”

“Totally thought it was going to be the part where Molev knocked you down by throwing another person at you,” Brandon said with a smirk.

Roni sniggered.

Steve strolled over to the window and moved the curtain to look out.“So you think we’re not getting our tickets?”he asked with an angry note in his voice.

My gaze slid to Molev’s, who was watching me closely.

“If they’re fast with the vaccine, we might not need to worry about it,” Katie said.

No one contradicted her.We all knew it wasn’t simply a bite that killed a person. We’d seen how torn apart some of the undead were, and I was pretty sure most of it hadn’t happened after infection.

“Okay. We’ll take one day at a time like we always do,” Sid said.“We give them today and see what happens. But we should talk about the way you threw the soldier.”

All eyes turned to Molev, and he finally looked away from me.

“As impressive as that was, I would recommend against that in the future,” Sid said.“Based on what was in that room, they want to test you.And that kind of display is just going to make them more curious about what you can do.”

Katie glanced at me then Molev before shaking her head.

“I think we got lucky this time. But I don’t think that will be the end of it.Patrick would have reported what we’ve all seen. The way you wrecked the tank and survived a hellhound attack?”she shook her head.“There are going to be a lot of people interested in just how strong you are and what kind of threat you pose.I’m betting their team isn’t just working around the clock on a vaccine.”
