“Explain,” Molev said.

“I think they’re going to be picking apart your DNA.Imagine coming up with a drug that would boost strength, speed, and agility.Don’t get me wrong. They’ll be focused on a vaccine, too.But after seeing you, they’re going to want to find a way to ensure you don’t have the upper hand.”

“Creating a super soldier drug might be a stretch,” Roni said.“But I could see them trying to make a sedative or some other way to slow you down.”

Molev crossed his arms and glanced at the window for a long moment.

“Thank you for trusting me with your thoughts,” he said finally.“Will you join me when it’s time to leave?”

They all nodded their agreement, and I waited until he looked at me.

“I have some questions about that.Would we be going to Whiteman? How secure is it?You saw the other bases. They’re falling, one by one.How do you know your base is still whole?”

“I will keep you safe, Andie.”He looked at the rest.“My brothers and I will keep you all safe.”

“We appreciate that, but it doesn’t answer my questions,” I said.“Where would we be living?Tents?Homes? The undead population is increasing every day.And they keep learning new tricks.By dangling the promise of a vaccine, you’re going to have a lot of people throwing their lives into your hands.Probably a lot of moms with kids since you didn’t specify women without family attachments, and I just want to be sure you have this all planned out.”

“Will you walk with me, Andie?”Molev asked instead of answering.

“Sure.”

He looked at the others.“We will return.”

The second we were out the door, he picked me up and took off at a run.He easily cleared the perimeter fence without slowing and kept going. The barren landscape blurred by us for several minutes before he stopped and looked down at me.

“Did we just run away?”I asked.

“There is no buzzing here. Before I left, Ryan explained things to me.Cameras.Listening devices.Human technology. He said that the people in charge shut down much of it because they feared we would find a way to listen to their plans.I believe that is what they are doing in our assigned house.”

“Okay,” I said, trying to ignore the sudden intensity of his gaze.“Thanks for explaining.Would you mind putting me down?”

He glanced around the sunlit landscape then placed me on my feet. The wind played with my hair, and the waning mid-day sun helped warm my face.

“The humans at Whiteman were filled with anger and hate.Mya saw that they wanted to treat us as slaves, not as equals. We left Whiteman and created a new home.A place where humans and fey could live together without prejudice.

“We built a wall around many homes, using vehicles left behind by the infected. You saw how easily only a few of my brothers killed many of the infected. It is safe.”

His gaze scanned the area around us and returned to me.His silent study brought back the way he’d named me first, before his request for females. My thoughts hadn’t veered toward the logical.I’d been thinking of how cozy we were at night.I’d thought it was for safety, but what if I’d been misreading things all along?

I needed to know.

Unlike Patrick, however, I knew how to ease into topics.

“You were smart to make vaccinating the volunteers part of the bargain you struck.I don’t think you’ll have a problem finding five hundred. But I need to know…what are you going to do with all of them?Is each woman going to be assigned to one of your men to help guide them like I helped you?”

“No.We will not assign anyone. The women may choose.”

“Okay. And once they choose, what are they going to be doing?”

“Improving relations between our two people.”

“That’s a vague answer, and you know it.Say what you really mean.”I crossed my arms and stared up at him, mimicking the stubborn stance he favored.

His lips twitched as he studied me.Then he reached out, slowly cupping the back of my head.

“You spoke to me and showed concern for another in my care.Because of that, I followed you.I watched to see if you were who I hoped you would be.”

“And who is that?”I asked.
