“That you’re taking a lot of risk for very little reward.”

“There is no reason to remain in this world if all the humans die,” he said.

“Whoa,” Katie said softly.

“Yeah. Why do we mean so much to you?”Roland asked.

Molev met his gaze.“We have no females of our own.”

Roland made a choked sound and sat up a little straighter.“You serious right now?”

“Uh, so when you said all those female volunteers were going to help improve relations, you meant ‘relations,’” Roland said, air-quoting the word.

“There are going to be a lot of happy women if all your kind are built like you,” Roni said with a significant glance at his clearly defined package.

“Will they be happy, though?”Katie asked.“I wouldn’t be if I were forced into having relations with someone I didn’t know.Someone I didn’t care about.”

“Nothing will be forced,” I said quickly.

“Where’s the guarantee?”she asked.

“It’s here.It’s us right now.He’s givingmea choice.”

“Damn, gurl,” Roni drawled.“I knew you had it in you.Well, you will have it in you.”She winked.

Katie shook her head, still looking troubled.

“Tell me about the course they wanted me to complete,” Molev said, giving us the change in topic we needed.

“When things went to hell and they realized they needed more people in the field, they set up areas where they could test physical fitness,” Roni said.“There are several courses. They started the civilians out on the easy ones, and if they passed the minimum thresholds for time, they moved up to the next course and the next.”

“The final course is intense,” Katie said.“And it’s not timed.”

“They just used it to weed through the people who had the guts to keep pushing even when we knew we would fail,” Roni said, sharing a look with me and Katie.

The fact that Katie and I had kept going was the reason we’d even been considered for the squad.

“It’s physically challenging,” I said.“A lot of crawling under things, over things, running, jumping, climbing, balancing…and there’s no stopping anywhere for a break.”

“I would like to look at these courses,” Molev said.

“Can’t hurt to look,” Sid said with a shrug.

“Maybe not the day it was suggested in someone’s earpiece, though,” Roland said.“Unless you want them to know how sharp your hearing is.”

An engine rumbled outside, and Roland got up to check the window.

“Another vehicle.Looks like a civilian driving it.She handed off a bag to the guards.Looks like Steve and Brandon made nice with the guards. They’ve got the bag and are laughing and chatting.”

Steve and Brandon joined us a while later, tossing a paper bag to Molev.

“Something in there should fit you better,” Sid said.“And if it doesn’t, they said they’ll find something else.”

Molev left with the clothes.

“Next time they want him to do something physical, he should wear those shorts,” Roni said, watching him leave.“It’ll distract everyone.”

“Roni, that itch you’ve got isn’t going to scratch itself. You want help with that?”Steve said with a smirk.
