I stare at his mouth, panting hard. “Your tongue feels so good.”

Zabriel opens his eyes, and they’re blazing red. He closes his lips around my pointer finger, and then my third finger. Finally, he sucks all three into his mouth like he’s trying to savor as much of me as possible.

Pulling them out again, he says huskily, “You’re the most delicious thing I’ve ever tasted.”

My hands are gripping his shirt. My breath is coming faster, and we stare into each other’s eyes. I’m holding on to him. This isn’t even my false heat making me do crazy things.I’mholding on to him. Me. Isavelle.

Zabriel sets me slowly back down on my feet. There’s a bulge at the front of his breeches, and my body slides over it.

Alpha wants to fuck me.

Alpha wants to push me down onto this floor and dominate me.

A wild impulse in me wants him to do exactly that.

Zabriel kisses me, and I taste something new on his lips that must be me. “I love your kisses so much.”

“Has it occurred to you what else I could do with my tongue apart from kiss your lips and suck your fingers?” Zabriel gazes meaningfully at me for a moment.

I stare up at him, frozen by realization. He would…where I just touched myself with my fingers?

With a heated smile, he moves me to one side and opens the door. As he leaves, I take a last furtive glance at his forearm, and the bite mark is so savage that it sends a shiver through me. What if he does that to me and I’m ripped in two?

What a way to go, whimpers a needy voice.

I passthe afternoon running errands for the Temple Mothers and then return to my room with an armload of pages that are writings about Old Maledin that have been translated into the common tongue. I’m curious about the world Zabriel grew up in, and I’m sitting down to study them when there’s a knock at my door.

I open it and see that Zabriel is leaning against my doorframe with a smoldering expression in his eyes and a waterfall of pale, shimmering fabric over one shoulder. There’s a smile playing around his lips, and I know he’s remembering what we did this morning. It’s all I’ve been able to think about all day.

Does he look different, or am I just seeing him differently? He looks delicious. Good enough to swallow deep down inside me.

His gaze sweeps over me like I’m looking different to him as well. “Hello, little queen.”

That’s what he said the first time we met, and in the same amused tone.Hello, little queen. I apologize. What’s left of your bridegroom has been ground into dust.

I knew he was trouble the moment those words were out of his mouth.

“Hello,Ma’len,” I say with a smile. For some reason, calling himmykingtoday makes his smile widen.

He draws the garment he’s holding from his shoulder. “I have a present for you. You didn’t like the other dresses that I had made for you. I didn’t know you well at the time, but I know you better now. I thought to myself, Isavelle deserves something that’s as beautiful as she is. She should put a dress on and it should look and feel like it’s made just for her.”

Curious, I hold out my hands and he lays the dress across them. It’s sewn from delicate silk in a luminous cream color, cut so that it sits off the shoulder, with a little seam at the waist and a simple but graceful and flowing skirt.

“I asked for it to be cut this way so I could see the long, lovely line from your shoulders up to the nape of your neck.” He reaches behind me and traces up my spine with his fingertips, making me shiver in pleasure.

“It’s beautiful,” I tell him. It’s really for me to wear?

Zabriel’s eyes brighten. “Will you wear it tonight? With your hair up?”

So that he can see the nape of my neck. Touch it. Kiss it. Dress in a way that he finds alluring and that attracts his adoration. A warm flush spreads through my cheeks, and I nod again. Zabriel groans softly and presses a kiss to my lips.

I really wield this kind of power over a man, and a man like Zabriel?

“What are we celebrating?” I ask him.

“A month since we emerged from beneath the mountain.” A bleak expression crosses his features and he touches my cheek. “It just occurred to me that it might be difficult for you to feel celebratory about such a thing. If you’d prefer to stay in your room, I’ll understand.”
