I reach up and stroke his throat and trace my fingers down his bare chest. His flesh is warm and smooth beneath my fingers. Zabriel’s eyelids flutter and the muscle in his jaw clenches. Seeing him enjoying my touch so much has me melting even further into his lap. Is this what couples do, relish giving each other pleasure? I wonder just how much pleasure we could have, sitting on his throne, our fingers meandering all over our bodies. A ripple of heat goes through me.

“Fuck, your scent,” Zabriel murmurs. There are still a few twists in my braid, but he drags his fingers through my hair, loosening it completely.

I stare up at him, transfixed by the sight of him. My braids are undone.

I’m becoming undone.

As he draws his fingers slowly through my hair, Zabriel says, “You’re looking at my bride and the future Queen of Maledin. The true Queen of Maledin, who will soon be wedded to the true King of Maledin.” His tone sharpens. “I don’t like the fact that you’re looking at her. I’ve killed men for less.”

“The High Priest…”

Zabriel snarls, “I said, lower your fucking eyes.”

A swift pang of pleasure darts through me.

The priest must do as he’s ordered. As Zabriel’s red eyes dim, he turns back to me and drags the pad of his thumb over my lips. My mouth is tingling and sensitized from his bite, and my lips part for him with a soft pant.

Zabriel smiles down at me. “You may take this message back to the High Priest. Lady Isavelle is likely already expecting my child. I will slaughter any Brethren who dares come to my gates and speaks the name of the mother of my children.” To me, Zabriel whispers, “Do you want me?”

I feel knotted up inside from tension and pleasure. The question feels seductively dangerous.

Zabriel tries a different question. “Do you think I’m handsome?”

“Yes,” I whisper. I thought he was magnificent from the first moment I laid eyes on him. Even through the veil, feeling his presence and listening to the heavy baritone of his voice, I felt entranced by him.

“Yes, Alpha,” he corrects with a soft snarl. His eyes are burning red again.

I don’t know whatAlphameans, but inside me, something or someone sits up and takes notice.Alpha, she breathes, and I have a sudden urge to shove the gold cloak from my body and pull the straps of my chemise down so he can see all of me.

Zabriel studies me closely. “Say,Yes, Alpha. I know you can hear me.”

“Who are you talking to?” I ask.

“You,sha’len. Only you. Always you. Say,Yes, Alpha. Let me hear you, and I’ll give you a kiss.”

A kiss, moans the voice in my head.Alpha wants to kiss me.Fall at his feet. Beg for his lips.I get a sudden mental image of doing just that, my arms wrapped around his knees and whimpering for a scrap of his attention.

“Don’t be so pathetic,” I whisper, and Zabriel’s eyebrows shoot up in surprise.

I clamp both my hands over my mouth. I didn’t mean to say that out loud.

There’s a strained silence, and then Zabriel bursts out laughing. “You’re hearing your designation, aren’t you? The things I heard in my head as mine were emerging were sometimes bizarre.” He relaxes back on his throne and smiles at me. “Once I nearly fought a tree because my Alpha told me it insulted me by whipping leaves against my face on a windy day. What did you just have the urge to do?”

If I told him I’m craving to kneel at his feet and suck on one of his fingers he’d probably think it was the hottest thing he’d ever heard. “Nothing…specific.”

Zabriel pushes ever so slowly up with his hips and smiles wolfishly. “Too shy to tell me? That’s all right. I’ll tell you something instead. You feel fucking amazing sitting on my lap, sha’len.”

He catches the edge of the golden cloak and draws it slowly down, uncovering my shoulders. I can’t make myself begin to think about stopping him.Let Alpha see what belongs to him.

“You shouldn’t do that while the priest is watching,” I breathe.

“Hm? Oh, he left.”

I look around in surprise to see that the Great Hall is empty of everything but golden candlelight. “Oh! Do you think it worked? Will the High Priest leave me alone now?”

“If he doesn’t get the message the easy way, I’ll start spilling blood.”

There are so many emotions and sensations swirling through my body as Zabriel holds me in his arms, and one of them is gratitude. I glance at him shyly from beneath my lashes. “Thank you for protecting me from him.”
