He was gone.

Something glinted in his place. I knew I should go to Miles, but the draw was undeniable. I knew Cal was probably calling me back. But I was unable to hear anything as I realized it was a dagger. My dagger.

I snatched it from the rubble, turning it over in my hand to realize the inscription on the blade was gone.

“Petra!” Cal yelled again.

I whirled to where he kneeled over Miles, but a cloud of smoke materialized around me and the ground cracked open beneath me. I was sucked into a chasm, falling, spiraling, grappling for anything as I screamed at the top of my lungs, confusion and fear and–

Nothing. I stopped. I didn’t hit the ground. I’d just stopped, and there seemed to be solid ground beneath my feet, but no impact. Darkness closed in around me. I looked down and saw no body, tried to flex my hands but they weren’t there.

“Hello?” I shouted, my voice breaking with terror, because I knew exactly where I was.

Malosym’s voice slithered into my ear, a hiss as he said, “Welcome to the Darkness Beyond.”
