I stretch my legs, hands leisurely resting on the armrests, and admire her figure. Her long, lean legs are tucked under her, and she keeps her arms crossed over her stomach, outlining her breasts even more. But it’s her face that brings me to my knees.

Her lips make slight movements with each stolen glance my way and it’s so easy to forget this is all a pretense. She tries to keep her eyes glued to the window in a desperate attempt to maintain her composure. I have to admit the view is truly stunning, both in the cabin and outside.

At first, it looked as if we were moving between land and ocean, but then for ages there was nothing but blue below. Now, right in the middle of that never-ending blue, I can spot a long, thin line of land. We’re almost there.

“We’ve been through this already,” she points out, her voice steady and almost sweet. “The best lies have just a sprinkling of truth in them. If I want my mom to be convinced, we need to have a solid story for our lies,” she reminds me before continuing.

“We ran into each other and decided to talk things through. And just like that—”

“We fell in love all over again.” I nod, a smile spreading on my face, more genuine now. “That’s so mature of us.”

She snorts at the implication that she’s doing this out of pettiness. “Look who’s talking about maturity.”

I’m surprised by how playful she sounds. Still, my smile breaks for a brief second. “Touché.”

No matter what I do, I can’t change my past actions. I take another sip of my third cup of coffee of the day, enjoying the strong flavor and the slight burn in my mouth and down my throat.

“Just…”Don’t disappoint me, she wants to say but holds her tongue. “Just make sure to act natural. And to do as I say. I don’t want anyone to get on to us. We are madly in love, remember?”

The smile is still etched on my face, but she can sense the difference. She knows exactly what I’m thinking.

“Perhaps we should make sure we’ve still got it then.” I move back to the seat alongside her, and I know she has every intention to mock me but when our eyes meet, it’s desire that prevails. She traces my jawline, scraping her fingers against the stubble on my chin. I lean in, resting my forehead on hers, pressing my lips against hers until she parts them.

That’s the only sign I need.

Chapter Thirteen

Carol

Brian’stongueslipsinside, the familiar feeling sending a shockwave down my body. I should push him away, but instead, my nails sink into his skin, a soft moan drowned in his mouth. His arm wraps around my waist pulling me closer, the other curving around the back of my neck, keeping me in place. I feel the heat creep up my body getting twisted into my already tense muscles.

No, no, no, this is not how we are going to play this.

I tighten my grip on his jaw and push him away. “Let’s wait until we land for this. No reason to make this harder on ourselves.”

He looks at me lost in his own desire, exactly how I want him to be, and purses his lips. “As you wish,” he says, his voice hoarse but not annoyed.

The bulge between his legs is growing and his face looks flustered. I have to bite my cheeks to hide my satisfaction.

Sensing my eyes on him, he continues, “After all, we’ll be spending three days together, sharing a room—” He looks at me from the corner of his eye. “Sharing a bed.”

As much as I’m counting on that for my revenge plan, the lump in my throat betrays me. I make a muffled sound and it seems to amuse him, but he doesn’t move away or say anything else until we land a few minutes later.

Accompanied by a looming headache, I make my way out of the airport, Brian by my side, carrying both our suitcases. His is a simple carry-on, easily held with one hand, while mine is almost triple in size. I don’t usually travel packed to the brim, but you can never be prepared enough for a wedding.

The salty, Florida air, acts almost like a painkiller.

“Mr. Knight,” a voice draws me back to reality. A young man, no more than twenty, wearing a suit slightly too large for him, waves at Brian. He’s standing in front of a large SUV with tinted windows.

“Did your friend arrange for this too?” I turn to Brian who simply links my arm with his again. “What are you doing?”

“Madly in love the moment we land—that’s the plan, remember?” He plants a quick kiss on my cheek and then turns to the young man. “Paul, right?”

Paul nods, unreasonably excited to be handling our luggage. “I will be your driver throughout your stay, Mr. Knight. And Miss…?”

“Martin,” I say. Brian opens the door for me, and I can’t help but notice how the white shirt sticks to his body.

Paul puts our luggage in the car trunk, all the while talking about the everlasting summer here. Marathon is an island in the middle of the Florida Keys, a coral cay archipelago on the southern coast of Florida, and perhaps the most laid-back place I’ve ever traveled to. Not that I’ve done a lot of that.
