“Sir—”

“That’s an order.” Blane’s voice was that of his past, a military tone of command.

He slipped into the Navy SEAL like slipping into a set of old clothes.

The men closed their mouths and remained where they were as Blane and Kade moved past them and out the front door.

He and Kade parked a half mile away from the target. The three guys Kade had brought in the second SUV did as well. Kade knocked out the security system and cameras via his laptop.

“Easy peasy,” he said, shutting the lid of the laptop and sliding it under the seat.

Both men got out of the car, guns in hand. Kade handed him a silencer. They sent the three backups around to the rear of the house. Blane and Kade went to the front.

The door had an electronic lock hooked to the Wi-Fi, which had enabled Kade to unlock it. The knob turned easily in Blane’s hand and he eased the door open, Kade right behind him.

There was a guard inside the lavish foyer, facing away from them. He turned at the sound of the door opening and was slow to react. Blane’s shot was center mass. The guard collapsed and didn’t move.

The sound wasn’t the light ping from the movies. The silencer muffled the shot, but it was still the unmistakable sound of a gunshot. Blane fully expected more guards to come. He was not disappointed.

Three men ran around the corner, guns drawn.

Shots rang out, both aimed at them and from them. Blane spun aside and a couple shots gouged the wall. He aimed and fired several times in a row.

The men went down in a blaze of glory and Blane was knocked onto his back by a shot to his chest. The vest he was wearing protected him, but he lost his breath for a minute.

Kade held out his hand and hauled Blane to his feet. “You good?”

“I’ll live. Let’s go.”

They moved forward, stepping over the bodies. One was still alive but not for long, judging by the amount of blood pooling underneath him. Blane still kicked away the gun lying next to the wounded man.

They reached a hallway that stretched both left and right. He stopped and listened. He didn’t hear anything. He motioned for Kade to go left and he’d go right.

The floor was some kind of granite tile but his steps made no noise as he neared an arched doorway on the left. Light poured into the hallway.

Blane pressed against the wall by the doorway, gun pointed at the ceiling. He took a breath and rounded the corner, Glock coming down in a two-handed grip to aim.

A man was using Anne as a shield in front of him, a wicked looking blade at her throat.

Blane saw red.

“You must be Trevor,” he ground out.

“And you’re Blane,” Trevor sneered.

Anne looked exhausted. Her face was tear-stained, she had an enormous bruise on one cheek, and her lip was split, bloodying her lips and chin. Her hands were zip tied together.

“And what’s your motive for kidnapping my bride?” Blane growled.

“It’s him,” Anne managed to say. “He killed Matt.”

Blane believed her.

“Let her go, dickhead, and I’ll let you live.” A total lie. He was a dead man walking.

“I don’t think so. But we can bargain for her life.” The knife nicked her neck, drawing blood.

Blane’s hand tightened on his gun.
