“What do you want?”

“I have a video camera set up. I want your statement about how you murdered your uncle in cold blood. Then I want you to officially withdraw from the race.”

“And why do you want this?”

Trevor shrugged. “I don’t particularly care. But she does.” He nodded toward Blane.

Blane glanced behind him and couldn’t conceal his shock.

Linda stood just inside the doorway, holding a gun which was pointed at him.

“Linda? What…?”

Her face was twisted with malevolence. “I’ve given youyears. Years! Thenshecomes along and suddenly I’m shifted into last place.” She paused. “You betrayed me. So now I’m betraying you.” Her voice shook with rage.

“And my uncle?”

“I made it my business to know everything about you, Blane.” She laughed. “Look at that! I finally get to call you by your name. Only took holding a gun on you.” Linda sighed. “The lengths a girl has to go to…”

Blane’s eyes narrowed. “It was you. You arranged the plane crash. Smithson told you and you told your pet Trevor here.”

“I really wanted to just kill your new toy,” she said. “Your being on the plane was just an added bonus.”

“And the pilot?”

“Terminal cancer. His family got a very nice payout plus his life insurance.”

“Smithson knew you were going to do that,” Blane guessed. “He just wanted to keep his own hands clean.”

“You’re a clever guy, Blane. I’ll give that to you.”

“You and Smithson thought Anne would turn on me, that’s why you gave her the file about her brother.” The longer he kept her talking, the longer Kade and the backup guys would have to figure something out.

“It almost worked.” She shrugged. “But this will work, too. Now put down the gun. We’re going to make that video, or your whore will be forfeit.”

Blane hesitated, looking back at Anne. Their gazes met. He read hopelessness in her eyes. Trevor saw his hesitation and drew a shallow cut in Anne’s neck. She winced and her jaw clenched, her lips pressed tightly together.

He made a decision. Bending down, he laid his Glock on the floor and stood.

“Come with me,” Linda said, motioning with her gun.

“Not until he lets Anne go.”

Linda considered, then nodded at Trevor. “Keep her tied.”

Trevor released Anne and shoved her into a chair none too gently. Anne winced again. Blood trailed down her neck from the cut.

“Watch her,” Linda ordered.

“I want a bonus for this,” Trevor warned.

That seemed to piss off Linda. “Fine,” she said through clenched teeth. She looked back at Blane. “Come on.”

Blane walked in front of her down the hallway.

“Pretty risky,” he said. “The assassination attempt in a crowd, Secret Service watching.”

She laughed. “You know, that actuallywasn’tme. But it looks like I’m not the only one who wants that bitch dead.”
