“Forgive me, Milady,” he said, leaning his head in the nook between my neck and shoulder.

“There’s nothing to forgive. You’ve done everything necessary to make sure I’ll return.”

Gabriel raised his head and peered into my eyes, then at my lips, then back to my eyes. “If you only knew how much willpower I used to restrain myself from kissing you yesterday.”

“Ah, the vampire venom incident.” I felt my cheeks emanating steam. “I was a bit…uh…uninhibited.”

“Mmm, an uninhibited Milady is right up my alley,” Gabriel said, mere inches from my mouth. He kissed me as if he had taken a small bite out of my mouth.

“Always the carnivore,” I said.

“I’m not a carnivore, my love. I’m a sanguivore. But also, a Petra devourer,” he said with a mischievous smile. “Consuming blood is a necessary endeavor. But being a Petra devourer is a full-time predilection.”

“I still need to learn so much about you,” I said.

He pushed me on my back and began indeed devouring my mouth, then stopped and gazed into my eyes. “We’ll learn together.” And went back to devouring my mouth.

The limo was getting steamy, and the only thing calming my nerves was the dark-tinted windows. Then the car suddenly halted. When we rose to see what was going on, a swarm of kids surrounded the limo. As I looked around, I saw it was my parents’ neighborhood. “We’re here,” I said excitedly.

It was late afternoon, so most kids were outside playing. Once an unusual vehicle appeared in their surroundings, the neighborhood didn’t stand a chance. As I got out of the car, I saw my mom peering from the window of our little, beige house. The front door opened the following second.

“Mom,” I yelled and rushed to hug her.

“Aren’t you a little too excited to see me?” Mom asked. “We haven’t seen you since Spring break, but still.”

“Can’t a daughter miss their mother?” I asked, fearing my excitement would make her suspicious.

“Yes, yes. But who is the man accompanying you?” She pushed me to the side. “And why did you arrive in a limo?”

So much for parental love, but I couldn’t blame her. Once Gabriel made an appearance, his presence attracted everyone’s attention. Then again, if she knew the full story, Mom would probably hold on to her dear heart and start praying for the first time in her life.

“Where’s Dad?” I asked.

“Ah, he’s at work,” Mom said, ogling at Gabriel as he walked toward us while texting something on his phone.

“But it’s a weekend. Why is he at work?”

“Well, you know your dad. He needs to meet his quota of sold cars.”

“Could you call him? I want him to meet Gabriel as well,” I said, slightly disappointed.

“So this is Gabriel? What a handsome, sexy man,” Mom said.

“Mom, stop drooling over him. We still need to make a good impression,” I said, crossing my arms.

“You’re right,” she said as if she had woken up from a dream. “I’ll call your dad and ask him to buy some appetizers from the grocery store. Is he allergic to something? Does he eat meat?”

“Are you asking if he is a carnivore?” I asked with too much insinuation in my tone.

“What a weird question. I’m asking if he has some dietary restrictions.” Mom began texting something to Dad.

“Get your head out of the gutter, Petra. You’re at your parent’s house.” “Sorry, Mom. I’m tired from the long flight,” I lied.

“I see,” she said, still not looking at me. “Oh, hello,” my mom squealed.

“Good afternoon, Mrs. Costin,” said Gabriel as he kissed my mother’s hand. “It is a distinct pleasure to meet you.”

I could see my mother melt under Gabriel’s gaze. “Come on in. Gabriel, was it?” Mom said, overly excited.
