“You know when he said chicks, he didn’t mean chickens, right?”

“He didn’t? The lad looked quite excited to go,” he said.

His genuine reaction made me burst into laughter.

“I’m glad you’re enjoying my lack of proficiency in the modern American vernacular.”

“No, I’m not laughing at you. I just imagined Elijah’s face when he realized where you sent him.”

“And suddenly, I feel jealous.”

“Trust me, there’s nothing to be jealous of,” I said. “He was the only bug that deserved to be squished. Glad you found another way to put him in his place.”

“Now that this is settled, are there any other questions my love needs answering?”

“No, I guess not.” I sighed in relief.

“Good, because I was barely holding myself from doing this,” he said, dropping his last bastion of decency, his black boxers.

“From doing wh––” I didn’t get to finish my question when Gabriel swept me off my feet, and in half a second, I found myself in the bathtub with him.

“Why would you do that?” I rubbed my eyes to clear my vision, and what I saw was a bare water god, looking too handsome for his own good.

“You looked a little tense. Since baths have a soothing effect, I decided to help you relax.”

“Not when I’m still dressed,” I said in consternation.

“I can help you with that,” he said with a raised brow.

“I believe you’ve done enough. I need to get out of here.” I turned, but he caught me from behind and hugged me tight to his chest.

“No, stay,” he whispered in my ear.

Well, when he spoke like that, who could refuse? I leaned onto him as he progressively began undressing me. Dexterous as usual, he undid the buttons of my blouse as well as the button and zipper of my jeans. In a matter of minutes, I was naked without participating much in the process. I couldn’t confirm if the bath was soothing, but I could confirm Gabriel’s tender caresses accomplished the task impeccably. He began leaving a trail of kisses from my neck to my shoulder.

“Are you ready for the wedding?” Gabriel asked.

“After the first time, it gets easier,” I said, and he chuckled.

“Good. I’m planning to marry you every year for eternity.”

“What about when I’m a wrinkly, old lady?”

“There is an antidote for that,” he said, kissing my hand.

“You want me to turn,” I said.

“Only when you’re ready,” he said as he continued kissing my body.

“But you said you never turned anyone without their consent.”

Gabriel stopped his caress and looked at me. “If you wish to remain human, I will never force you to become anything other than one. Being a vampire is everything but easy. There are many things one might acquire in terms of strength and agility, but there are also a lot of things that are lost. I would never wish for someone to suffer for eternity from their decision or worse, kill themselves, desperate for liberation. That is what hell on earth looks like.”

“I’m not saying I don’t wish to turn, but at the same time, I realize I would have to renounce my family and the life I lead as a human.”

“That is understandable,” Gabriel said. “You can remain human for as long as you wish, even with the added danger.”

“Added danger?” I turned toward him.
