My words soured her demeanor, but Vedoma quickly changed to a chuckle revealing her refined features. Could these people stop being so gorgeous? Then again, she looked more like an ice queen than your run-of-the-mill princess.

“I heard someone calling you empress. Are your lands by any chance up north and you dwell in an ice castle?” I asked.

“The lands I rule are the ones you stand on,” Vedoma said.

I lost count of how many times my jaw wished to dislocate and fall to the floor. “How is it possible for you to rule over these lands if their king is Gabriel?” I asked.

“When you’ll learn the difference between an empress and a king, then you’ll realize, little historian,” she said as her eyes lowered down to my belly.

“So here the heiress lies,” she said.

“Heiress? You mean me?” I asked.

“No, I mean the child you bear,” she said.

Kira stepped in front of me and said, “Empress, she doesn’t know yet.”

“Oh my.” She cackled. “What an honor to bring you the news. It’s a girl, Milady. Congratulations.”

“How did you know?” I asked.

“It always amazes me how humans get through life oblivious of what is right under their noses. You better open your eyes, historian, before your little, pristine world turns to flames.”

“Empress, I believe it’s enough,” Kira said.

Vedoma looked at Kira for a split second before she decided to end today’s torture.

She snapped her fingers, and her entourage turned to leave while she had a few last words to say. “Everything you’ve acquired until now, consider it a benevolence on my part. I’ll see you around, Milady,” she said and began spreading negative energy with her cackling. The lady had the face of a princess and the personality of a witch. Talk about confusing. But not only her physical and internal aspects clashed in my brain. Her words rang loud in my head, like church bells, and I couldn’t find an explanation for what she said. How did Vedoma get here? How did Gabriel get to the point where he had to deal with our worst enemy? And how did she know the gender of my baby? Also, I was going to have a girl. The swirling thoughts made me dizzy to the point where my knees buckled. Kira noticed and helped me walk to the bed.

Once my head lay on the pillow, I focused my attention on my only friend here. “Kira, you must tell me what this is all about. How is this possible? The one enemy I hoped to have escaped from the past now rules these lands with Gabriel. And why did Gabriel keep this from me?”

“His Majesty wished to tell you when you were prepared,” said Kira.

“How prepared do I need to be if in a week or two I’m having our baby,” I said.

“I assume he didn’t want to say anything to not disrupt your peace of mind,” Kira said apologetically.

“So much for not disrupting my peace of mind. A complete failure of a plan, considering I didn’t get the truth from him but from my archenemy, who apparently Gabriel is in cahoots with. Is it true that Gabriel is not the sole ruler of these lands?”

“His Majesty is indeed the ruler of these lands, but Her Empress is the ruler of these lands across time,” Kira said.

“I see.” That makes more sense. “What about during the present time ruling? Does Gabriel obey her too?” I asked.

“We all do. But the good news is it’s not for a long time. The Empress travels a lot, so we get to see her once or twice a year.”

“And where does she travel to? Her ice castle?” I asked.

Kira giggled. “No, she travels in time, Milady.”

Why didn’t I think of that? It was so obvious. “Why does she choose to travel so often and for so long?”

“I believe you should ask His Majesty this, as it is not my place to speculate on behalf of the royals.”

“I see,” I said, already preparing my speech for when I met Gabriel. “Then do you know how she knew about the baby’s gender?”

“Because of the prophecy,” Kira said somberly.

“I’m tired of hearing about this prophecy. Can someone tell me already what the prophecy is about and why everyone is so bent on it?”
