Chapter 22

"You haven’t heard what the prophecy is yet?” Kira asked, surprised.

“Well, no. Have you?” I asked.

“Of course I have. Every new vampire who went to school knows it.”

“You also have a school for vampires?”

“How will they learn the basics of vampirism? It doesn’t come with instinct, you know,” Kira said.

I wanted to delve deeper into what the heck was basics of vampirism and what in the world did they teach in vampire school, but first, I had to find out what the prophecy was.

“So what do they teach you about the prophecy?”

“Oh, it’s simple. It goes like this:

“Chronos has gifted a daughter,

Who will scour the paths of grime,

Dawn shall swallow the night’s tailors,

By wielding the wheels of time.”

It sounded like an old-timey poem but nothing more. “And what does this poem/prophecy have to do with Vedoma or me?” I asked.

“At first glance, it might seem like an inconspicuous poem. But you see, Vedoma’s mother was a tailor to the Hungarian royals when she stole the Eye of the Dragon. A witch that possessed the power of time was a great threat to all supernatural beings, but also to humans. She used her powers to bring darkness into The Other Realm and began a massive war against the dragons. While in battle, she injured a seer who, right before dying, told her about the prophecy. Many have threatened Vedoma’s mother before, so she didn’t pay much attention to the seer’s words. But not paying heed ultimately cost her everything. She died at the hands of a time traveler.”

“Wait, there’s another time traveler somewhere? But I heard she was killed by a dragon.”

“That’s what I was told when I learned the legend. But like many legends, accuracy leaves much to be desired.”

“So the mother witch died from the hands of a time traveler. Shouldn’t that be the end of the prophecy?”

“Not quite. After her mother’s death, Vedoma was devastated and took the words of the prophecy to heart. She scoured the entire land to find a seer who would be able to decipher the foretelling. In the end, she did, and that’s when she found out that the prophecy wasn’t meant only for her mother but their entire kinsfolk.”

“Now, how did they know that? Everything already seems too preposterous to be believable.”

“Because of the word ‘tailors,’” Kira said.

“Oh please, everyone is hung up on a plural?”

“Yes, but also because Chronos is the God of time, and his gift could only mean one thing.”

Then it dawned on me. “The daughter of Chronos is my unborn baby because she traveled through time while still in my belly.”

“That’s right.”

“Well, that means nothing. Give any pregnant woman a magical pendant and send her through time, and bam, she has a time-traveling baby.”

“Technically, that’s correct, but fates don’t work like that,” Kira said.

“Do not tell me my unborn daughter’s fate is sealed,” I said.

“No, otherwise she wouldn’t be able to time-travel. But some choices are guided by superior powers we have no control over.”

“Great. Just great. Now we’re going with the “Chosen One” trope. What else? Am I also gonna birth a sword so she can fight time monsters?” I asked.
