“The same way I did, using the Eye of the Dragon stone. Except hers is more powerful, so she can travel anytime.”

“I see. And there is no other stone you might find?”

“There is a third stone, but it’s lost to time. Gabriel searched for it but couldn’t find it during the five hundred years he lived.”

“Well, the only way I see we could defeat the witch is through time travel. If she is able to jump from one period to another, we simply need to follow her till we finish our plan. She’s human, after all. If only we could find the third stone.”

My brainstorming mind took over me. If only we could find a way to travel through time. Wait. “There is a way, but we’ll be putting Athena in extreme danger.”

“What do you mean?”

“She can time travel without the stone.”

“Amazing. That could be the answer to everything, but she’s a baby. I don’t know how this can be safe,” said Mei.

“I can try it first. I can time travel with her and understand how the whole thing works. We could also ask Troy. He’ll definitely want to help. Especially after Kira’s death.”

“All of you lost so much because of one person. It’s time to kick some witch butt.”

I smiled. “I guess we can.”

“See. Now we’re talking.” Mei’s optimism outshined my gloom once more. This woman was a ray of sunshine if I’ve ever seen one.

I went to see Athena in her crib. She just opened her eyes and began cooing. I caressed her plump cheeks and said, “We’ll find a way, right Athena? We’ll fight together. For Daddy. For our family.” I turned toward Mei. “We need to find a gong of some sort. The sound made Athena time travel. I’ll check in Gabriel’s study.” I sprinted out of the bedroom door, full of hope I never knew I could have. Inside, the study was quiet. Shadow was missing. Gabriel took him as well, which meant he didn’t plan on returning soon. I searched around the half-empty shelves and found something similar to what Mom had at her house. Then I rushed back and handed it to Mei. “I’ll hold Athena in my arms, and on the count of three, you hit the gong.”

“Are you sure you want to do this now? Also, how will I know when you need to return?”

“There’s no better time than the present. Set the timer on your phone for five minutes, then hit it again.”

“Okay, are you ready?” Mei asked.

“Wait,” I wrapped Athena tighter in her blanket, already prepared for a windstorm, then brought her closer to my chest. “Ready.”

Mei exhaled deeply and hit the gong. But nothing happened. “Maybe it should be a different frequency,” she said.

“It could be. Try three times. Maybe that will make her time travel.”

“Okay.” Mei hit the gong three times. After the third hit, nothing happened. Again.

I began losing hope. “I guess it’s just not meant to…” The next moment, we were in a whirlwind much stronger than the one I had passed through before. My travel resembled a path through which massive gusts went through me like pages of a book. Now, those same gusts lashed at us from different directions. I could barely open my eyes, but when I looked at Athena, she looked in her element. She rather enjoyed herself. Talk about a special kid.

After an adjustment to the new environment, I began exploring my surroundings. Only when I looked down I realized we flew on a cloud above rivers, mountains, and lands which changed seasons each second. The longer we traveled, the faster it went. In the end, the image simply became a blur of white, green, and brown colors.

And then I saw her. Not her exactly, but the stone. It sparked a strong red beam across the time continuum like a lighthouse against the vast ocean. The stone could always guide us to Vedoma’s location. Three gong bangs and we would be facing the evil bee with an itch anytime we wanted.

For now, we had to end our little excursion and plan our method of attack. Just as I thought about it, I heard the gong three times, and immediately we found ourselves back in the bedroom. Athena began crying as if she wanted to return to the time continuum. I hurried to console her. Though the trip made Athena happy, it also tired her as she slowly drifted to sleep.

“Goodness, I thought I lost you forever,” Mei said and rushed to embrace me. At least someone enjoyed hugs just like me.

“We’re good. The trip was amazing. We also saw the witch. Or better said, the stone she’s wearing around her neck. She doesn’t even suspect the pendant is betraying her location. So we can forge a plan of attack. The more unsuspecting she’ll remain, the higher chances we have at succeeding.”

Mei jumped in excitement. “This feels like an adventure.”

“Yes, but let’s not forget Athena will be in great danger if we decide to do this. I must speak with Troy. Maybe he can help.”

After several days, I summoned Troy to the study. Surprised by my invitation, he looked at me confused, especially since after him, Mei entered with Athena in her arms.

“I know you are wondering why I called you. But this is a matter of high importance, and I ask you to keep it between us.”
