“Unfortunately, after the last coup and dealings with Vedoma, His Majesty ordered the majority of the staff to leave. So, the risk of someone finding out is minimized.”

“Did you talk with Gabriel recently?” I asked.

He nodded.

“How is he? Is he coping well?” I asked.

“He’s doing his best at handling it till he will be ready to return, Milady.”

“It is best not to tell him about this as well,” I said.

He looked doubtingly at me. “How so?”

“We’re planning an attack on Vedoma.”

“Another one? Milady, haven’t you learned your lesson the last time?” Troy asked somberly.

“This time is different.”

“It is hard to believe but continue,” Troy and his doubting nature spoke.

“As you may know, Athena can travel through time. We tried already, and to our surprise, Vedoma’s stone shone through the time continuum. We’re planning to travel there and attack her. Would you join us?” I asked. “We could really use your help.”

“First, this is the riskiest and most preposterous plan I have ever heard, Milady. If His Majesty finds out, we’ll….”

“His Majesty will not find out. Also, this is not a question of ifs. It is a question of hows. If you do not wish to help us, we are still planning on doing it ourselves.”

“I understand,” Troy said stoically. “I will begin with a reminder that vampires cannot travel through time, Milady.”

“I know, I know. But don’t you wish to escape the grip on your throats Vedoma has held up until now?”

Troy stood motionless, but I could see the pain in his eyes.

“Troy, you must help us in such a way that the mission will end in success. I need you to think of plans A, B, C, and down the alphabet. The witch must die. The how is but a matter of time.”

“I understand, Milady. But maybe we can share this information with His Majesty.”

“You know how he is. He will do everything to stop this and then leave just like he did the past two times. How many times do you need to see it to convince yourself that it’s only us who can do this?”

“If something happens to Athena…” Troy’s voice trailed off.

“She’s in her element in the time continuum. That’s the best sign we can get that the mission won’t harm her in any way. The only one we must fear is Vedoma. But there’s good news. Most of her retinue won’t be able to follow her through time since they’re all vampires.”

“Indeed,” said Troy. “Then I’ll require time to complete the estimates, statistics, and probable outcome of your mission.”

“Take your time. The end result is what matters.”

Troy nodded, excused himself, and left the study. Only after the door closed I exhaled and propped myself on the desk. Being tough has never been easy for me, but if that meant I could be with my family once more, then tough I would be. Also, I had no choice. I had to fight. For our family, for our love, for Gabriel.

Soon everything will end. But I wasn’t sure who would be the winner.

Chapter 16

The night before the mission, I couldn’t sleep and stared all night at the ceiling. It was clear I wasn’t cut for this. No great future awaited me in the business of spies and vanquishing enemies, but this wasn’t about me. Many have lost their lives because of her, and it reached a boiling point where it was between her and me. Someone had to lose, but one thing I knew for sure, I would put up the best fight of my life. Since my life truly depended on it.

I rose from the bed and put on the black combat suit Troy gave me. He said the clingier the material, the better. And no one could question the suit’s tight fit. I could barely pull it through my limbs. But unfortunately, the zipper in the back represented a bigger issue. I went into the guest room, hoping Mei didn’t sleep. When I approached the door, several unusual noises resounded behind it. I rushed to save my friend with whatever enemy she had to confront. To my surprise, Mei fought with the same issue as me––the darned zipper. Except, she didn’t want to ask for help. Indeed, we shared the independent woman gene. Only, in my case, I had Gabriel. He taught me it was okay to ask for help from those who loved you as they would never use it against you. Now it was my turn to help him. And Mei. “I see the pesky zipper in the back is giving you a hard time,” I said as I entered the room.

“You can say that again. I have never contorted my body this way before, but here I am, trying to bend into a bridge,” Mei said.
