“I was just thinking of that time you tripped over the rock during a cookout at the ranch. You were holding a plate of burgers that went flying all over, and then you landed on the table and were covered in potato salad. I had to cover my laughter as you got up and turned with murder in your eyes. You were ready to pound anyone who laughed.”

“Ugh, I was such a walking disaster. Sometimes I still am,” I say with a groan.

“But you never let those mishaps define you. The thing I love the most is how you brush yourself off, laugh at yourself, and keep on trying. That’s within a person. It’s not something that can be taught,” he assures me.

“I love being fearless, Gramps. I hope I never lose it,” I tell him. “I’ve been so scared this past month, and that worries me more than anything else. I can’t sink within myself. I want to live life to the fullest and keep going a hundred and fifty miles per hour.”

“You are that girl. It’s okay to take some recovery time now and then. You don’t know what that’s like because you always climb right back up, no matter what the situation is. For the sake of this poor old man’s health, maybe you can take a bit of a break for a while,” he says.

I smile. “Gramps, you’re my rock, my light in the storm. And you’re not a poor old man. You might be aging in years, but you’re still the strongest man I know. Dad thinks he’s tough, but I know you can take him.”

This makes Gramps burst out in his boisterous laughter, most likely making the walls in the house shake. I love the sound. It can bring a smile in the scariest situations. Gramps is life, he’s the very air I need to breathe.

We talk for a while longer before he rises to leave. He takes my hands. “Remember my beautiful granddaughter, no matter what you do in life, it will be great. You won’t fail. You might have to try multiple times, but you’ll never fail. You’re Jasmine Anderson, and you’re the greatest treasure this world has ever received.”

I fight tears as I hug him, feeling so much better than I did before he came in to give me a pep-talk. “I love you more than the stars and the moon.”

“I love you more than the entire universe,” he replies. He kisses my forehead, and then he leaves. I feel warm all over. I head to my room and hold my phone. I miss Hunter. I’m ready to make more memories with him.

Hunter answers before the first ring ends. “Hello, beautiful.”

I take a deep breath as his voice washes over me. There’s a feeling of excitement rushing through my body. I really love this man’s sexy phone voice.

“Hi, sexy,” I say, a purr in my voice. I hear the intake of his breath, and love having the power to make this strong man’s knees weak. “I’ve been thinking about you and me.”

“Oh, really? What are you thinking about?” he asks, quickly adjusting to my playful tone.

An impish smile plays on my lips as I lean back on my bed, my mind racing with thoughts of kisses... and more. “I’ve been trying to picture our... time together.” I deepen my voice so he knows exactly what time I’m trying to remember. From the extra hitch in his breath, he gets this new game I’m playing with him.

A new tension is building between us, our connection tightening. Maybe a little flirting is what will save the world. How can anyone ever be angry if they’re in lust? Maybe I’ve solved the illusive world-peace goal.

Hunter’s voice is husky as he speaks. “I miss being close, Jazz. You say the word and I’ll make your head spin,” he tells me. “I’ll make your body burn and kiss every single inch of you until your wriggling in pleasure beneath me, begging for release.”

My skin grows hot as desire fills my voice. “Where will you touch me, Hunter? How will your hands caress my body?”

“I’ll come over right now and show you,” he says. “I’m going to start with your lips, move down your neck, take my time across the mounds of your breasts until I suck your nipples into my mouth and taste them, suck them, and lick them until you scream. Then I’m going to slide my tongue down your stomach until it’s quivering before I spread your thighs and bury my face in your core. I want to swipe my tongue up your sleek folds and suck and lick you until you beg me to stop.”

We’re both breathing heavy as he stops. Longing rushes through me. I wanted to wait, but I don’t want to any longer. “I need you, Hunter. I need you now,” I tell him. I hear movement. “Take me to Miami.”

I hear the pause in his voice. “What?” I almost laugh as I force his muddled brain to switch directions.

“I want to go to Miami. If we’re going to explore this, I have to get away from my parents. I love them beyond words, but I want to go to paradise with only you. I want you to take me on the dates we’ve gone on. I want to dance on the beach again, and go on a hot air balloon ride. I want to jump into a cave, and I want to be beneath you as you’re buried deep inside me. Don’t come tonight. Let’s run away tomorrow and start fresh,” I say, suddenly feeling inspired.

“If you want to go to Miami, I’ll have it planned for tomorrow,” he says. I laugh, feeling lighter than I have in a while. We hang up and I jump up to pack. My parents won’t love this, but they’ll still support me. I’ll come back. I think I was always going to come back home. For now, though, I need to take a journey to rediscover myself... and I’m going to do it with my partner and... lover.

ChapterTen

Hunter

Can a person die from sexual frustration? I guess I’ll soon find out. I’m trying to do this right, and not rush into sex, but I’m about to explode if something doesn’t change. We arrived in Miami late last night and both of us fell asleep... in each other’s arms. As much as we were flirting the night before, she was surprisingly unsure once we were together. I’m okay with this. I even sort of like this softer side of this complex woman.

Right now the hot Miami sun is beating down on Jasmine and me as we make our way to our favorite place on the beach. A horrific shooter tried to ruin this place for us, but Jasmine and I both determined long ago to never let fear rule our lives.

It’s been over a month since she woke from her coma, and being alone with her is exhilarating. Maybe we can finally make some progress. The two of us share a love of martial arts, so this is a perfect opportunity to show her some of my fine Jujitsu moves.

As we reach the sandy shores, the sound of crashing waves fills the air, and sunlight is dancing in Jasmine’s eyes, giving them an extra sparkle that makes it seem like the sea is directly in her eyes. She’s a bit of a mermaid to be honest. I can see her leading sailors to their deaths. She’s so damn compelling that a man will willingly crash against the rocks just to get to her. She looks up and smiles at me, looking freer than I’ve seen her in a long time.

“Are you ready to get beaten by the finest Jujitsu practitioner in all of Florida?” I taunt, knowing her competitive nature.
