She bucked her hips against him, encouraging an eager thrust from the king, who was kissing her collarbone and edging up to the nape of her neck.

Taryn’s body went rigid, then softened instantly, feeling the coil in her stomach bursting open as the climax exploded, rippling through her. She felt Declan’s mouth open like a scalding cave, then sink his teeth directly into the supple skin just above her shoulder.

The blend of the sting of his teeth and the endorphins from the orgasm riveted through Taryn’s body so intensely that she thought she might rip in half.

But it calmed, like the waters after a storm, and they lay together breathing in a single stream of love.

“My King,” she whispered.

TWENTY-SIX

DECLAN

Declan stretched his muscles with a muffled groan followed by the regular cracks of unmoved joints.

Last night was the best night of his life. His mate accepted his proposal, and the mating bond was complete. He was absolutely hers, and she was utterly his.

The thought brought a blissful smile to his chapped lips. Declan wanted to do nothing besides nuzzle with his future bride. He rolled over to watch her slowly awaken.

Declan’s heart stopped as he shot straight up.

Taryn’s side was empty.

He wanted to believe that maybe she was in the bathroom or had snuck down to the kitchen, but his wolf instinct told him something was wrong. More than that, his connection to her told him she was not to be found in the castle.

“Please, I hope I’m wrong. I hope I’m wrong,” he chorused to himself as he hastily threw on his jeans and shirt. He stayed barefoot, not even bothering to button the shirt, leaving his abdomen exposed. He couldn’t care less. There were more important things at hand than proper presentation.

Declan prayed he was just being paranoid, given the latest circumstances. He wanted to believe that nothing had happened to her. That her stalker, Phillip, wouldn’t do this to her … or to him.

Declan wouldn’t enjoy ripping his throat out as much as he would someone who hadn’t been one of his best friends.

One of the guards saw Declan sprint through the hall.

“Sire, what is …”

Declan didn’t stop but yelled as he ran past. “Search the palace. Find Taryn. Notify me immediately if she is located.”

The guard did not waste a minute asking any more questions. He quickly saluted and took off to alert the others.

Declan slid into the kitchen.

It was empty. Not even a soul could be seen cooking.

“Damn it!”

He headed to Taryn’s room. Maybe she had forgotten something and was in there doing whatever needed to be done.

Declan bursts through the door, more hopeful than he thought he would be.

It was empty as well.

“Oh, no. Please, no.” He ran his agitated hands frustratingly through his hair. Worry built in his throat like bile.

She had to be here somewhere.

Declan pushed back his wolf instinct to shift and hunt for her. He needed to think clearly and logically. He had to at least try all possibilities before he went straight to the worst thing possible.

He called Madison first.
