“I was replaying the moment when you stepped out of the elevator tonight. One look at you reminded me of all the times I never fell in love.”

FIVE

TARYN

“These damned birds!”

Taryn groaned as she struggled to fall back to sleep.

There was an absolutely manic bird, practically trying to shatter the glass of the windowpane.

“I’m about to commit murder,” she hissed furiously as she sat up.

She threw the window open with a flourish. The bird swooped upward and hung in the air.

Taryn examined the animal, who was staring insolently at her. He had a pointy head like a cardinal, but this was probably not a cardinal because this little guy was green instead of red.

She was still in Declan’s bed, where she’d slept the entire night. The bed was wide, and Taryn was sure that the covers and pillows were filled with goose down.

The bed … the entire room, in fact … smelled like Declan.

“Damn,”she groaned again for reasons which had nothing to do with the bird.

Declan still hadn’t given back the key to her room. She knew why he was doing it. Declan was tired of her games and wanted to take back control.

He’s got the right to do it. He knows that I want him as much as he wants me.

But Taryn wasn’t ready for anything more yet. Despite how much she wanted him.

She was fine with Declan trying to take back control.

She’d just have to come up with a different way to get under his skin.

And Taryn could get really creative when she tried. Her sisters had always called Taryn a premium shit-starter. Taryn definitely knew how to stir the pot.

The bedroom door swung open with awhoosh, and there was Declan with a big tray and a pot of coffee sitting on the tray.

“Good morning, morning glory,” he crooned.

Sweet heavens, he was a sight. The royal shifter wore pajama bottoms and nothing else. His stomach muscles, which were clearly defined, narrowed into a perfect V-shape below his navel. His pajama bottoms were slung low around his hips, and Taryn’s throat went dry as the piece of clothing shifted around Declan’s body as he moved.

For a second, the pajama bottoms hung dangerously low around his hips, and Taryn dragged her gaze away from Declan.

She swallowed, and her resolve strengthened. He was trying to torture her. Let him try. This could be fun.

“Good morning, handsome,” she answered back. “First, I thought your bird friend woke me up, but now I see you read my mind.”

“I can, and I do read your mind, babe,” Declan chimed back. He smiled and flexed his arms while holding the tray when he said this, and she wondered if he’d done pushups right before coming in to wake her.

“Did you pump yourself up in front of the mirror before coming in here?” she jested.

He didn’t answer. He was too busy being a devil, and she could not help but notice again that his ass was rounded and tight as a drum. Bless him for that.

Right behind Declan was a maid carrying a tray full of food. The aromas flooding into the bedchamber were scrumptious. Maybe this wouldn’t be so bad. This was actually turning out to be quite good. There were a myriad of other situations she could be forced to mate into.

Declan poured coffee as he spoke. “Waffles, sweet cream butter, sausage, eggs, blueberries, and avocado toast,” he told her. He set her coffee cup on the table beside her pillow. Then he kicked off his slippers and climbed into bed with her.

Damn.
