“Fine,” she says and stomps off.

“False alarm,” Lyric says in a loud voice. I hear Rowan sigh before Lyric disconnects the call.

“Shall we?” he motions us inside the police station.

Eden marches inside with Moon beside her and I follow them into Lyric’s office. He settles behind his desk.

“I can’t believe this,” Eden announces before Lyric can speak. “Have you forgotten what Winter Falls stands for?”

“What Winter Falls stands for?” I mimic. “Isn’t Winter Falls all about being fair?”

“Yes, we are,” Sage cries from outside the office.

Lyric stands while muttering, “Another bane of my existence,” under his breath.

“What do you want, Sage?” he asks when he opens the door to her.

“I’m merely doing my job,” she claims. Sage is the police dispatcher. A job she takes great delight in using to fuel all of her gossip needs.

“You’re off duty.”

She widens her eyes. “I thought you might need my help.”

A muscle ticks in Lyric’s jaw. “No, you didn’t. You thought you’d learn the gossip before anyone else.”

“Can we get this meeting over? Some of us have businesses to run,” I grumble.

Eden flinches and I find myself intrigued. Why is she flinching? I shake my head. None of my business. Eden Spring is none of my concern.

Moon leans against Lyric’s desk. “I have time. The diner’s closed for dinner tonight.”

I scowl at my brother’s girlfriend and she waves at me with a smirk on her face. The woman is a shit stirrer. Perfect for my charming brother, but a pain in my ass. I prefer a woman who’s easy going like Eden.

I clear my throat. These errant thoughts about Eden need to stop.

“Could we get down to business? I don’t have all night.”

Eden stomps toward me. “Then, go. Get out. No one asked you to come.”

I glance down to make sure I don’t step on her feet. To my surprise, she has shoes on. “At least you’re wearing shoes today.”

Her brow wrinkles. “What does my wearing shoes have to do with anything?”

“You usually walk around barefoot.”

I’ve caught her numerous times working in her field with no shoes on. She doesn’t wear nail polish either. Yet somehow her feet are adorable.

She rolls her eyes. “Not in February I don’t.”

I cock an eyebrow. I caught her not a week ago working in her field without her shoes on.

“I slipped my shoes off to check on the soil.” She huffs. “What’s it to you?”

“Maybe I don’t want to have to drive you to the hospital when you chop a toe off with your shovel.”

“I wouldn’t want to inconvenience you.”

Lyric steps in between us. “Let’s all calm down.”
