“Blue. Yours is green.”

“You knew that from the book?”

He shook his head. “I knew because you wear it a lot.”

“Ah, you’re perceptive too, then. Favorite food?”

“Oysters.”

I wrinkled my nose. “Eww, no. Really?”

He chuckled. “Yes, really. I take it oysters are a no for you?”

“Oysters are a hard pass,” I confirmed.

“Noted.” He tapped the end of my nose with his forefinger. “And I will not be putting that in the book. Just so we’re clear, none of this goes in the book. Tonight is just for me and you.”

“I trust you,” I said, realizing it was true. There was something about Malachi that made me feel safe and completely myself.

He wrapped his arms around my waist until there was no more space between us. Like this, I even forgot that I was anything other than beach-body perfect. I was just the girl that made his eyes twinkle under the moonlight. And wow, I really liked how that made me feel.

Powerful.

“What’s your love language?” he asked, so close his hot breath sent chills over my skin. He smelled like a tropical waterfall, crisp and sweet with a hint of saltwater. His hand brushed my cheek and I had to remind myself this wasn’t a dream.

I wanted to answer his question, but he was already speaking my love language without even knowing.

“I’ll tell you what,” I said, breathless, “If you haven’t figured it out by the end of the night, I’ll tell you.”

“Mmm, a challenge.” He pressed his head to mine. His thumb prodded the corner of my mouth. “I accept, sweet Maisy.”

Chapter Four

Malachi

Maisy’s plump lips were the pink of the sunset we’d just watched. A freckle sat just at the corner of her mouth. I wanted to lick it just before kissing the hell out of her. The temptation to taste her, breathe her in, consume her… it was almost overwhelming now that I’d spent the past few hours learning all about her and listening to her laugh.

She was so beautiful. Under the pale moonlight, her fiery hair was darker. More auburn. Her celestial skin glowed brighter. And her eyes… green jewels that glittered as they sought me out.

I wanted to kiss her right now, bury my hands in those red curls and feel her body melt against mine.

But I had a destination in mind and we were almost there.

Reluctantly, I pulled away. Keeping her hand in mine, I led her farther down the beach.

“Where exactly are we going?” she asked.

“A secret spot,” I said. “We’re almost there.”

“What if someone beats us to it?”

I squeezed her hand, loving the way it felt in mine.

“That’s why it’s a secret. No one knows about it except me.”

She shot me a skeptical look. “No one? No one on this whole big island?”

“Okay, like one other person knows.”
