“Well, what if they decide to go there tonight?”

“They won’t.”

“How do you know?” she grinned until her teeth showed and I knew she was teasing me again. I fucking loved this game.

“Because,” I said, “that person is my father, and he’s currently off island until next month.”

“Oh.”

We passed a row of palm trees and followed the shore around to a group of boulders that stood as tall as two of me. From there, the beach opened up to a small, private, cove.

Maisy grabbed my arm and leaned in to whisper, “Someone’s house is over there. Should we be here?”

“I know the owner. It’s fine.”

She straightened, looking at me. “It’s yours, isn’t it?”

“That’s my bungalow, yes. But that’s not what we’re here to see. Follow me.”

I guided her down to the edge of the water, bypassing the cozy little beachside cabana where I’d spent many nights alone, watching the ocean, beer in hand. Tonight, I’d set out champagne and strawberries, and I planned to watch with a curvy little redhead in my arms.

But first...

“The water,” Maisy murmured. “Is it…glowing?”

“Watch this.” I bent to scoop up a handful of rocks and sand before tossing it into the bay. Instantly, the water lit up, sparkling neon blue against the black of night.

“Whoa!” Maisy’s eyebrows shot into her forehead and she let off a peel of laughter. “That’s amazing. I’ve never seen anything like it.”

A thread of satisfaction wound itself around my heart.

“Bioluminescent algae. It lights up whenever it’s disturbed.”

Maisy squatted to run her hands through the water, making it glow brighter wherever she touched. Funny how the water behaved exactly like my skin. My arm still buzzed from her touch moments ago.

“It’s beautiful,” she whispered.

The water was great but I couldn’t take my eyes off her. The way she practically vibrated with excitement turned me on for sure. But it was what it did to me inside that really had a grip around my throat.

The island was my life. I was born and raised here. My parents had worked in hospitality for as long as I can remember, and following in their footsteps satisfied me.

In all ways except one.

I wanted someone to share life with. Someone to wake up to every morning and come home to every night. Someone to spend nights out here at the beach, taking in the wonders of the ocean.

Maisy could be that someone. She just felt… right. She made sense. Everytime I looked at her, my mind saidshe’s the one.

“Is it safe to swim in?” she asked, standing. Her eyes met mine and I had to remind myself to breathe.

“It is. But neither of us are dressed to swim.”

She shot me a wicked grin. “Who said we need to be dressed?”

Oh, hell. Was she trying to kill me?

I wastryingto be a gentleman for our first date. Because eventually, I wanted to be very, very naughty with her.

Before I could argue, she was already untying her gossamer-like wrap dress and shrugging it from her shoulders. I held my breath…
