Too late to call Andi and explain myself.

But he’d hinted that I might be in deep shit. He wouldn’t give me any details except that her friends—and most importantly, his wife—were unhappy. Still, I’d managed to talk him into letting me volunteer as a trainer, and I’d scheduled my guys to be on-call in my place until I could hire someone for the night shift.

The plan was to set things straight with Andi face to face, and hopefully convince her to give me a second chance. But by noon, I’d already tried to call her three times. And even texted once in case she wasn’t answering because she didn’t recognize the number.

As the hours ticked by without an answer, my nerves threatened to eat me alive. And now, every second she didn’t walk through that door felt like an eternity.

Konner sauntered over, leaning on the counter beside me.

“So… I hear you fucked up already.”

My jaw clenched at his assessment. I wanted to think that Andi would understand the circumstances if I had a chance to explain.

“Must’ve had a damn good reason,” Konner mused. “Or you wouldn’t be standing here waiting to make it up to her.”

“I tried calling,” I muttered.

“And texting?”

I nodded, and Konner cursed.

“She ever late like this?”

“Andi? Naw, she’s as prompt as a sunrise.”

Pretty as one too, but I kept that part to myself.

“Damn it.” I had no backup plan if she didn’t show and wouldn’t answer the phone.

“Don’t worry man, she’ll come around,” Konner said, slapping me on the shoulder. “She’s a good one. A little rougher than some, because of how she was raised, but nothing you can’t handle.”

Damn straight.

But he’d piqued my interest.

“How she was raised?”

Konner arched a single eyebrow, considering how much to say. “You know that trailer park on the back side of the lake?”

I frowned. “The one they shut down last year?”

Konner nodded. “Sold it off to some developers.”

It was a dilapidated hot spot for all sorts of unsavory activities, but what did it have to do with Andi?

“I know the place.”

He glanced around as if someone might overhear him. “Well, she grew up there with her father. Kimmie says he was a mean fuck who liked to drink, and cut out of town just after Andi graduated.”

“Shit.” I tried to imagine my prim and proper girl growing up in a place like that. With a man like that.

I couldn’t stop the flare of anger in my chest that made me want to protect her, even if it was all in the past.

“And it gets better,” Konner continued. “Andi’s a big-time real estate broker now, you know—” I didn’t know, but now I did. “—and was solely responsible for negotiating the sale of the park.”

“Really.”

“Yeah, I remember it was a big deal for her. Cathartic I guess, saying goodbye to the place so it could be turned into something better.”
