“He…” I stood, feeling dazed, and grabbed my keys. I needed to get home before I did something really out of character. Likecry.God, Andi, don’t dothat. “He said, ‘I’ll be there’.”

I headed for my car, and Kimmie followed.

“But then he didn’t show?”

“I think I misunderstood things, Kimmie. Let’s just drop it.”

“How do you misunderstand ‘I’ll be there’? It’s pretty clear.I’ll be there.”

I shook my head, sliding into the driver’s seat. “I think he was just playing around.” I thought about the towel. “Or being nice. It didn’t mean anything.”

Kimmie snorted, blocking me from shutting the door. “Yeah, right. I’ve seen the way he looks at you on his way out.”

“What?”

“Andi, he’s got to be into you. Even Konner thinks so.”

“What, do you guys just sit around and speculate about my love life?” I frowned, imagining all my friends worrying about the ninth wheel, and whether or not she’d ever have what they had.

“No, it’s not like that. Don’t you notice how he’salwaysleaving right when you walk in the door?”

Yeah, but it was just a timing thing. I arrived at seven sharp. He left at seven. It didn’t mean anything.

“Well, Konner says he takes his time in the locker room just so he can pass you at the door.”

That… that sounded contrived. Or, the workings of a devious schemer?

“That’s ridiculous, Kimmie.”

She held her hands up. “Look, I’m just saying. He notices you. Maybe if he didn’t show, it was for a good reason.”

“It shouldn’t matter.”

“But it does,” Kimmie said quietly.

I nodded, gripping the steering wheel to keep my hands from shaking.

“Does he have your number?”

“No. It all happened so fast.” And I still wasn’t convinced it wasn’t a misunderstanding between us.

“Well…” Her voice turned cheerful in an instant. “Good thing he knows exactly where to find you.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell her I’d probably be skipping out on the gym for a while.

And if I was right about Mr. Incredible, he’d likely be avoiding me too.

Chapter Five

Baker

I leaned against the counter near the gym entrance, glancing between the clock and the door.

It was twenty after seven.

Andi was late for Chub Club hour, and I couldn’t help wondering if I was the reason.

It had taken me hours to finish the job last night. The owner of the vehicle had given me the wrong location, sending me twenty miles in the wrong direction. Then once I found them, I nearly got my truck stuck in the mud. By the time I made it back to town, it was too late to contact Brooks.
