I raised an eyebrow. “You, on top of me. Mission accomplished.” There was more to it than that. But I couldn’t tell her I’d been dying for a way in. Something to make her notice me.

Her mouth fell open, surprised, and my gaze flicked to it.

“Care to explain what that means?”

“Oh, now you want me to lay out the whole plan? Sorry, babe. A smart strategist never reveals his plays until he makes them.”

“Plays,” she muttered, turning to open her car door, revealing leather seats. Damn, leather and water weren’t friends. She tossed her bag inside and started to get behind the wheel.

“Wait,” I said, stopping her. “Wait just a second.”

Quickly, I dug in my gym bag, retrieving a towel, and draped it over her seat. It wasn’t going to contain all the moisture, but it would help.

“There.”

She hesitated, staring at the towel, but then settled in and started the engine as I closed the door.

My throat tightened, knowing this was it. I shot my shot, and missed. Andi wasn’t interested. And if I stood here watching her go, I was going to look like a puppy dog on the other side of a pet store window.

Damn.

As I was about to turn, the driver’s side window lowered, just enough for me to see her eyes. Goddamn beautiful eyes, with those long reddish lashes. Something in them made me go still. Something guarded and unsure. A little amused, a little skeptical. Made me want to dig deeper, get behind the gates and learn what made her put them up in the first place.

If only she would let me.

“You’re a flirt, Baker Madison,” she said. “You talk to all the girls this way?”

God, if she only knew.

Which is why I told her.

“I’ve talked to zero girls this way. You’re the first.”

She blinked, her eyes combing over my face. “I can’t tell if you’re telling the truth.”

“I guess you need to get to know me better.”

Seconds ticked away as she stared at me through the falling rain.

“Okay,” she said finally.

“Okay?” Shit, the word barely made it past my throat in one piece.

“Meet me at Jackal’s.”

“The ice cream place?” It wasn’t exactly what I had in mind for a first date. Too casual, especially with both of us soaked from head to toe.

She nodded. “It’s been a wild day. I need an ice cream sundae. That’s where I’m headed now.”

I’d had visions of coming to her door with flowers, wearing the only suit I owned. A quiet romantic dinner, over which I’d soak up every detail about her life possible.

But I wasn’t saying no to this. Not a chance in hell.

“I’ll be there,” I said.

And like a lovesick fool, I stood right there in the rain, watching her drive off before I ran for my truck. If I hurried, I could get there before she ordered.

But halfway to Jackal’s, my phone rang with a stranded vehicle just outside of town, and I realized it was already after eight. My guys were off duty for the night.
