Shit.

I’d have to take it.

Quickly, I phoned the driver to confirm their information. A lady with two small children. I had room in my cab for them, but there’d be no time to stop and tell Andi. In this rain, I couldn’t make them wait. The area was prone to flash flooding, and it was my job to get them off the side of the road.

A sinking feeling settled in my gut.

My girl was waiting for me. What would she think when I didn’t show up?

I’d get her number from Brooks and call her later. That’s the best I could do.

Goddamn it.

I hoped it was enough.

Chapter Four

Andi

I finished the entire glorious sundae before finally admitting Baker had stood me up.

Scraping the spoon along the crease of the plastic container, I managed to collect some meager remnants of chocolate syrup, stalling for a few more minutes.

It was just… he’d seemed soreal. So blatantly interested in me, pushing the whole get-to-know-him thing.

I’d been almost convinced, ready to test the waters with him. What harm could a little ice cream date do? My embarrassment aside, we were both a mess from the rain, so it seemed low risk. No pressure to look nice or act just so. The ugly—some of it, anyway—was already out in the open, and it felt like there’d be no bullshit. Not with the blunt way he spoke.

You, on top of me. Mission accomplished.

My cheeks blushed all over again, and I wasn’t sure if it was because I’d landed on him or because he made it sound dirty.

I liked the way he didn’t take himself too seriously. But if anything won me over, it was that blasted towel. It was such a ridiculously thoughtful gesture that I’d decided to take the chance with him. Step out of my comfort zone and see what happened.

Come on, Mr. Incredible. Don’t prove me wrong now.

It was the Chub Club way.

Don’t let anything stop you from living your best life, one hundred percent of the time.

My friends would be proud.

As if I’d conjured one, Kimmie’s voice came from behind me.

“Hey, I thought I’d find you here.” She sat on the bench beside me, kicking her feet up on the one next to us. “You okay?”

I nodded, not completely sure if I was being honest.

Was I okay?

I’d made a fool of myself in front of the one guy I couldn’t stop thinking about, snagged a sort-of date with him, and then got magnificently stood up. It was a bit of a whirlwind really.

So, was I okay?

“Meh,” I said, shrugging. “Just not in the mood for exercise tonight.”

Kimmie snorted. “Or any night, am I right?”

I tipped my empty sundae bowl at her. “Truth. I guess I’m your excuse for skipping out?”
