I don’t know how long we sit, hip to hip, kissing like two horny teenagers. I feel Xenia’s brain conjuring up ways to corral me inside her tiny house, where we can strip down in private.

Or maybe I’m putting thoughts in her head. After all, I’m most definitely wondering what would happen if we were truly alone out here.

Meanwhile, Xenia’s kisses aren’t wild. She isn’t in a rush. She sucks at my tongue like she’s got nothing else in the world to do tonight.

My hands slide under her ass and tug her over onto my lap. I need her closer. I think about when she lost her balance and ended up in my arms. That’s the closeness I crave now.

While I’m not sure about dating, I do like the idea of consuming Xenia and making her a part of me.

A slamming door startles our lips apart. I keep Xenia trapped on my lap as she cranes her neck to see who might be coming.

“Is that Velma?” she asks.

Tugging her closer as if she might flee, I explain, “Seeing through walls isn’t one of my superpowers.”

Xenia rests her head on my shoulder and nuzzles my throat. “I don’t care if she knows you’re here.”

“Maybe you should,” I say, thinking logically. “She could fuck around in your life and mess with your shit when you’re not around.”

“If she starts trouble, I’ll take Rose the Cat and find somewhere else to live,” Xenia whispers as her lips suck at my throat. “Do you know how intoxicating you are? Is making me crazy one of your superpowers?”

“Sure, I’ve always had that ability.”

In the distance, Velma’s voice gets louder. I don’t hear who she’s speaking to, but it’s probably Francis. The woman’s clearly riled up. I bet she feels possessive of Xenia. I also suspect she had everything planned out in her head, regarding her grandson and the new tenant. I can’t imagine how she’ll flip out if she finds us making out in her backyard.

Even so, I don’t move Xenia from my lap. Ignoring the voices, she only sees me.

“Do you ever go to those parties at the Pigsty?”

“Not in a long time,” I reply and then shrug. “No, I guess that’s not totally true. I dropped by a few months ago to get food, pot, and booze. They have plenty on Fridays, so I stocked up and left.”

Xenia studies me in the dusky light. “I’m thinking about going to the Pigsty party on Friday.”

“No.”

Ignoring my harsh tone, she explains, “I’ve never gone to a biker party before.”

“There’ll be naked chicks. Probably a few naked bikers, too.”

Xenia smiles in that way respectable people do whenever someone talks about wild people. She doesn’t get how rowdy anything really is because she’s never gotten anywhere near that kind of life.

“Walla Walla likes to walk around naked.”

“I don’t know who that is,” she replies and then hesitates. “He’s the big, blond man. The one who smiles a lot.”

Narrowing my eyes, I don’t like how pleased she sounds over remembering my club brother. Walla Walla is a pretty boy like Ruin and Tomcat. Is that what Xenia wants? If he had walked through the shop’s door first, would she be sucking on his throat right now?

“Walla Walla is single right now.”

Xenia stops leaving wet kisses across my sweaty skin. Her gaze finds me, studying my frown.

“Hobo, you know I don’t have any friends to set him up with. Aren’t all those club ladies I met already hooked up?”

Giving her an ugly grin, I know she’s messing with me. Xenia doesn’t react to my irritation. She uses her delicate fingers to smooth out the frown across my forehead. I can’t help relenting under her tender touch.

Xenia isn’t the first woman to try to comfort me with her patient lady moves. Others tried to save me. I’m a “work in progress” for too many women. That’s one reason I stopped hitting up the parties. I couldn’t just find a girl who wanted to have fun. They’d always look at me and wallow in pity.

One of them—a chick who couldn’t have been more than nineteen—once said, “Your sadness comes off you in waves. It’s heartbreaking.”
