“I’m a nice guy with a good job and a stiff dick.”

“And here I thought that was your gun I felt when you were lying on top of me.”

Cooper snorted. “You and I are going to be just fine, Anabella. Cerberus will help you take Blackwood and Limp Dick down, and we’ll make sure you don’t get killed in the process.”

“Are you ever going to tell me where we’re going?”

“We’re almost there.”

“Where is ‘there?’ I mean I know we’re somewhere outside a small town in Wisconsin. But that’s all I know.”

“We’re headed into the woods to a beautiful little cottage on the shores of Lake Michi Gami.”

“Michi Gami?”

“Michigan. Lake Michigan.”

“And what are we planning to do?”

“We’re going to plot how to bring down the bad guys.”

He’d meant it to be a light-hearted response but could see the tension creeping back over her body.

“Do you think we can?”

Coop reached over and squeezed her thigh. “We have the best forensic accountant in the world working with the best security and intelligence firm. You bet we can. The bastards don’t stand a chance.”

CHAPTER9

ANABELLA

She knew he’d said it flippantly and as a joke, but the job really had become to ferret out who was doing what and how to stop them. Well, that and staying alive. She had known in the abstract since before she’d stumbled into Cerberus’ headquarters that someone was trying to kill her. She’d dismissed the first two attempts as coincidence, but the last attempt and the surveillance equipment in her loft had brought home the idea that she really was in someone’s crosshairs.

“They really want me dead, don’t they?”

“Yes, they do. I was wondering when you were going to come to terms with that.”

“How long are we going to have to stay out here? I do have a business to run.”

“And a life to live.” He let that sink in. “But you can work remotely. In fact, Seth is busy setting up a secure line so they can’t find you, and he also wants to piggyback his own line to it, so we can see who is trying to monitor you.”

“He won’t be hacking their system?”

“Not unless you want us to. We are aware of what is at risk for you—not just your life, but your business, as well. Bringing us in to spy on your clients wouldn’t look good for you so you decide if and when we step in.”

“You didn’t seem to have any scruples about digging up information about me.”

“Most of it was public record, but you’re our client so we control what we hack about you.”

“That’s convenient,” she said sarcastically.

“It is, isn’t it?”

“How long am I going to be a guest of your safe house?”

“Just as long as it takes for you to gather the information you need to take to the authorities and shut Blackwood down so that you can go back to living your nice, normal, safe life.”

“Why does it sound like some kind of awful life sentence when you say it like that?”
