“Yeah. I’m so sorry, Merrick. I shouldn’t have left you.”

A sob is torn out of my throat and I run to grab her up and hold her so damn tight that she can’t run. That she won’t dissolve into the mists of my memories like she has so many times in the last few weeks.

She looks up at me and there are tears in those damn bright aqua eyes of hers. Her red curls are tamed up into some twisted updo on her head and she’s wearing a gorgeous wine-colored dress that hugs all of those curves that I can’t forget holding.

“I missed you so much, Merrick.” A sob rips out of her throat and then I’m kissing her desperately, tasting her salty tears on my tongue and not giving one god damn fuck.

“I missed you too, baby.” I put her away from me and growl. “But if you ever do that to me again, I’m gonna fucking paddle your ass until it’s as red as your hair! I was terrified that something happened to you and I couldn’t get ahold of you! Why did you leave without waking me?”

She touches my cheek and then I gently drop her toes in the sparkly heels down to the ground. “I needed to take care of something.”

“What?”

“Take me home and I’ll tell you all about it.”

I nod my head and drag her out of the building, not even pausing when people take a good look at her and start hollering and pointing at my painting. I don’t give a shit what they want to say. Fuck them!

The only voice I want to hear is hers.

And then I intend to make sure that she never gets away from me again. I’m putting a ring on that finger as soon as possible.

I pat my pocket. I’ve been carrying it around since she left, hoping.

I look over at her in my car as we drive home. I kiss her hand that’s held in mine and I know. This is what I needed.

I can do anything, even get a stupid job if it means I have her.

And that’s exactly what I intend to tell her. As soon as I find out why she left. And maybe spank her for scaring the hell out of me.

CHAPTER9

Onyx

Butterflies churn in my gut when we pull up to the little cottage that I’ve been dreaming about since I left. That and the man in it.

He comes around the car and helps me out, holding my hand like he expects me to disappear.

I smile and follow him up to the door, waiting when he puts the key in and drags me inside, then turns to push me against the door. I whine when his hands run through my hair and he tilts my head, his lips coasting across my throat and down into the hollow of my neck, biting and tracing my skin with his tongue.

“I’ve missed you so damn much,” he hisses and I moan, my fingers tangling in his hair.

“I’ve missed you too.” My voice is breathless, my fingers busily trying to pull his shirt out of his pants so I can touch his skin.

“Slow down, baby.” It’s like the first time. I can still hear those words in my ear even as I knew we didn’t have all the time in the world. But he didn’t know that.

My lips trace along his jaw and I back away until I can wrap my legs around his and then shimmy and pull myself up so that I can look into his gorgeous face. His dark eyes are so full of love and lust and desire that it’s almost like a living thing trying to force its way out of him.

“Don’t ever leave me,” he growls. “Never ever ever again. I swear I will hunt you down and tie you to my fucking bed if you do.”

I smirk at him as I run my tongue across his jaw and listen to him grunt. “That sounds like a helluva lot of fun.”

“You are a bad girl.”

“But I’m your bad girl.”

He pushes back and his eyes bore into me. “Are you sure? You’re not taking off for parts unknown again?”

“No.” I shake my head. “I’m all yours. I’m gonna move here and stalk you until you realize that you can’t live without me.”
