His smile is soft and his hand comes up to caress my cheek lightly, sucking in a breath when I turn my lips into his palm and kiss it lightly. “That’s not gonna be a problem. I already can’t live without you. When I woke up that morning and you were gone and then I found out you checked out of the inn? I felt like I died. Like the walking wounded. It tore me apart.”
I sigh and tuck my head into his chest, listening to his heartbeat under my ear. “I really wish I hadn’t done that. But I thought it was for the best. I needed to take care of something and I couldn’t do it with you there. It would have created more trouble.”
“What did you have to do?” His dark eyes search mine and I sigh, knowing that we have to do this now. I want him but I can’t let him wonder what was going on. We have to have all of this out in the open.
“I had a fiance.”
He backs away from me and his arms drop to his sides. “What!”
I move to touch him and he leans away from me. “Merrick! Don’t! It wasn’t like that at all!”
“What was it like, Onyx? I was in love with you and you were engaged to another man when you slept with me.”
“No. I was not. Not until I went home. I had been and then I split from him and then I went home and let him think that I changed my mind so that I could look into my parents’ company. He’s their partner and I had a feeling there was a reason he was so desperate to marry me.”
“Other than he was in love with you.”
“He was never in love with me. And I hated him. My parents wanted me to marry him. I just wanted out. I have my own business and I didn’t want anything to do with theirs.”
“So why did you go alone with it at all?”
“I had a feeling that he was embezzling from the company. And I was right. I found all the evidence that I needed and took it to the police and the FBI.”
His mouth is hanging open and he’s staring at me like he doesn’t know who I am.
“Where is he now?”
“Sitting in jail waiting to go to court and be arraigned.”
“Oh my god! Why the hell didn’t you tell me? What happened with your parents?”
“Because if you had come with me, it would have created so many problems that I might not have been able to find the information I needed. And I told them I don’t want to see them anymore. I cut them out of my life.”
“And you did find the information?”
“I did. And I knew that it was time to come home to you.”
“Did you ? Why?”
There’s a little smile on his face and I can’t look away from the love in his eyes.
“Because I can’t live without you, Merrick. It almost broke me when I had to leave you. I couldn’t have stayed away much longer.”
I take a deep breath. “And I knew that you deserved to know.”
“Know what? About this fiancé business?”
I shake my head and close my eyes and then open them, steeling myself for whatever might happen. “No. About the baby. I’m pregnant with your baby.”
CHAPTER10
Merrick
“Ab-b-baby? We’re having a baby?”
My heart soars and I can’t stop the tears falling from my eyes. I have gone from hell to heaven in just seconds.
She nods her head and I drop to my knees, my hands cradling her rounded belly. There’s no sign of our baby yet but soon her body will quite obviously be cradling our baby and everyone will be able to tell that she’s mine and she’s the mother of my child.
