“What the fuck are you talking about?”

Theo glanced down the hall and confided, “I think he’s the same one with a hit on his head. I just can’t be sure. They don’t have a last name. Only that he’s in this area, and he’s handsome.”

My heart bounced up to my throat. “A hit? Eli?”

“Yeah. A hundred grand for Eli's death. Proof needed.”

I grabbed his shirt and pushed him brutally into the wall. “You mother fucker. If you think for a second, I’m going to let you hurt him for money or tell some buddy of yours where he is?”

He pushed me with all his might, which wasn’t much, but I did release him. “I’m not doing that, you fucking Neanderthal.” He smoothed his hair and shirt as he said, “I want to stop it. You said I needed to ingratiate myself with these people. What better way than to save the life of one?”

I was shocked and silent for a long time, enough for him to get in my face. Not to scream that time, but to grit, “If you ever touch me like that again, it’ll be you with the price on your head.”

He walked off, and I hurried to catch up but managed to keep my hands to myself. “Listen, tell me what you know.”

“Some guy in jail is offering up the money. He’s also offering money to someone breaking him out of jail.”

“We have to tell them.”

“What if it’s not this Eli?”

“I don’t think there is a bunch of pretty boy Eli’s in one small town.”

“Fine, but I’m doing it!”

His chin was up again, and I granted Theo his wish. “But not…in that way you have. Be…pleasant.”

“Exactly how pleasant should I be, telling someone they have a price on their head?”

Theo had a point. “Fine.”

We called everyone into the living room and sat on the couch, the floor, and the chair left until we could get better ones. “Thanks for gathering, everyone. I thought it best you all heard this, being you’re all so close,” I started, then gave Theo the floor.

“Someone’s out for Eli’s head. Some guy in jail has set a bounty on him.”

Eli went immediately pale, and Noah on his feet, yelling at Theo, “Where’d you hear this?”

“Sit, please, Noah,” Eli begged. “We figured this might happen.”

“You know about it?”

Eli shook his head and told Theo, “He tried to get your friend, Javi, to do it.”

“Javi is not my friend. He’s with my…cousin if you can call Dan that.”

Theo was stiff like he was ready to bolt from the room. I had to reassure him. “Theo, no one is angry at you.”

“No, Theo,” Burke said. “Thank you for warning us. Do you…know if anyone is ready to take him up on it?”

Theo countered the question with one of his own. “Who is this? This person?”

“Harvey, my ex,” Eli said.

Noah had his arm around Eli’s shoulders. “You okay, babe?”

“No, but I will be. What can we do?”

“Take his money,” Damon said, making everyone turn to him. “What?”
