“Theo made a good point. Without the proper prop makeup, bullet holes wouldn’t look real.”

“I have the story concocted. No worries,” Theo assured us.

I thought of something but didn’t want to put a wrench in the plans. After Theo took the photos, Eli got up and went to the pigpens. “How about an arm?”

“I wish we had a chunk of meat, but yeah, get in there.”

“Now, wait a minute,” Noah yelled. “He ain’t getting in that pen!”

“I was thrown into one,” Theo informed him with an arrogant lift of his chin. “He’s bigger than I am.”

Noah turned to me and laughed. “Already tried to feed him to the pigs. Well, jump in, Eli, but not in that pen full of males.”

“No, Theo told me which one.”

He got into the same pen with the female pigs, and when he lay in the mud, those females came over to start sniffing at him. “Hurry, Theo, take the pictures,” Noah ordered, and Theo started clicking away with his camera.

“Stare out more,” he told Eli. “Like you’re looking at the sky but not seeing it.”

And Eli understood and did it, letting his eyes go unfocused, and…yes, dead. When the photoshoot was over, Joel and Eli went with Theo to the bedroom to watch him work some magic with Photoshop, and the three of us stayed in the kitchen, drinking a beer and talking over the issue.

I didn’t like any of it and told them so. “I’m here if you need me, Burke, Noah, you know that, but Theo is my priority. What bothers me is this, these people may have connections to the ones after him. If that’s the case, then here? And pigs? They’ll know right where he is.”

“Javi thought of that when I spoke to him about this. I figured he’d call you, but he’s got some problems. Danny’s getting pissed about the whole thing. The other family isn’t backing down, and Danny will go full force on them, or he wants to.”

“For…Theo? He doesn’t like his cousin.”

“He’s family. Danny didn’t have a real family for most of his life. Now that he has one, even if the individual people aren’t his favorites, he isn’t about to let one get hurt. Javi is trying to keep Danny from starting a full-out war.”

“Fuck,” I whispered. “So, more so, now.”

“Well, Javi said that he’ll take the pictures that Theo is making, give them to one of his crew, and let him take the credit for killing Eli, then drive the body to the country. They have a whole story worked out.”

“That’s going to piss off your boy,” Noah said, then corrected, “I mean…he ain’t your boy. Yet,” he added at the last while smiling.

“What the hell are you talking about? He’s my client. I’m here to protect him.”

Burke and Noah both started to laugh.

“What?”

Burke answered, “It’s so fucking obvious, Hud. And it’s fine! Theo’s already getting better. Of course, if he’s the badass Dom he claims to be, maybe you’ll be his boy.”

“Shoot,” Noah scoffed. “He’s trying so hard to please you. He’d crawl on broken glass if he thought you’d take him to bed.”

“From what I saw at the club, he’s a top. What? Will we be like Damon and Burke all those years before Joel? Fighting over who tops any particular night?”

“I didn’t see him topping anyone,” Burke informed me. “He likes his dick sucked, sure, but topping a guy? I got the feeling Jamie, or Jamal, or whatever that blond guy’s name was; I got the feeling he was the top in the mix of the two of them.”

“With Theo’s attitude? I can’t see him letting anyone top him. He thinks he’s so…dominant, and maybe he is! Just because the three of us have our opinions, they are just those, opinions. I don’t want to judge him like that.”

Again, they looked at one another and laughed. “What was it, Noah, two days ago, and this guy was ready to kill Theo?”

“Three days.”

“That was fast.”

I stared at one, then the other, waiting for them to tell me the punchline. “What?”
