“Hard to believe, I know, but despite what you think, I’m actually not so bad.”

Lucy scoffs. “Yeah, right.”

We get back to the house and Lucy stomps ahead of me. Inside, Ella is waiting in the hall. She jumps up off the steps, frowning at the sight of Lucy. “What’s she doing here?” Things have been frosty between the pair since Tag chose Lucy over Ella.

“I’m collateral,” Lucy mutters, shrugging.

“Does Tag know?” she asks.

“There would be no point if he didn’t,” I say, rolling my eyes. “What the hell were you thinking taking my wife on an adventure?”

“Piper needed to explain to Hulk. I thought it would be best if I went too, so I could keep an eye on things.”

“And you thought you’d tell her tales about me and Aurora?” I growl.

She looks sheepish and shakes her head. “That was Hulk,” she mumbles.

I breathe deep to keep my cool. “And how the hell does Hulk know?”

“Didn’t you know that Ella and Hulk had a fling?” Lucy chimes in, and I feel my blood pressure spike. I glare at Ella, and she physically wilts before me. “Oops. Was that a secret?” asks Lucy innocently.

“You had sex with the man who’s determined to ruin me?” I yell.

“It’s not how it seems,” mutters Ella.

“So, he forced you?” I shout, feeling the vein in my neck popping.

“No, of course not. He’s not like that.”

I glare at her. “Get out of my sight before I do something I’ll regret.” She turns to the stairs. “And show our guest to a spare room,” I add. She scowls but allows Lucy to follow her.

I’m awoken by Ella gently shaking my arm. I sit up and pain shoots through my neck. I slept at my desk again. Checking the time, I see it’s almost five in the morning. Piper’s been gone for hours.

Ella thrusts her mobile phone at me. “It’s Piper. She wants to talk to you.”

My heart hammers in my chest as I press it to my ear. “Piper?”

“Do you love me, Anton?” she asks.

“Yes,” I say firmly. I can’t afford to hesitate and ruin this.

“Then please listen.”

“All ears, my love.”

“I need space—”

“Piper, we’re married,” I cut in. “We need to work this out together.”

“You said you’d listen,” she snaps.

I sigh, pinching the bridge of my nose. “Fine. Continue.”

“I’m not saying no. I’m not walking away . . . yet. But I need some time to think things over. I know you’ve rationalised everything in your head, but mine’s a mess.”

“Are you still with him?” I ask, standing and staring out the office window.

“No,” she mutters. “Tag’s with me.” I frown. “He told me you took Lucy.”
