“And you have a key?” he asks. I nod, producing that too. “I’ll show you up there.”

We ride the elevator to the top floor, and when the doors open, I gasp. We step into a large entrance hall. “You’re the only one who has access to this floor,” he tells me. “Use the fob in the elevator and it’ll bring you right up.”

“This whole place is mine?” I ask.

He nods, smiling. “Congratulations.”

He leaves, and Mae squeals excitedly. “Oh my god, he brought you a condo.”

“He’s buying your affection,” says Lucy, shaking her head.

My phone alerts me to another text, and I smile wide when I see Anton’s name.

Anton: This isn’t a sex pad for your lovers. It’s a place for you to rest and think about me. About us.

Me: I have no doubt you’ve paid the security to spy on me anyway. I’ll keep all sex away from the condo.

Anton: And you’ll think about us?

I tuck my phone away. He’s all I think about.

The girls left hours ago and all I’ve done since is explore. The apartment is huge and fully furnished. There are four bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a kitchen big enough to host a party. But it feels so empty. I send a text to Anton.

Me: Are you busy?

Anton: No.

Me: Meet me for dinner?

Anton: I’ll book somewhere and collect you in an hour.

Me: I know a place. No booking required. I’ll send you the location and meet you there in an hour.

I’m nervous. My stomach is flopping around like its complete mush, and I feel sick. I straighten my shirt and check my reflection in the restaurant’s window before entering. “Welcome to Betty’s. Table for one?” a waitress asks as she roller skates towards me. I spot Anton and shake my head, passing her.

He stands as I approach. “Betty’s?” he asks, raising his brows.

I laugh as he kisses me on each cheek. “You need educating on real food.”

We sit and he hands me a sticky menu, which I glance over to be polite because I already know I want a Betty special. We give our order, and the waitress skates off to get us drinks.

“You set Lucy free,” I state.

He nods. “She was way more trouble than she was worth. Non-stop chatter and nagging.”

I grin. “I can imagine. But Ella didn’t kill her, bonus.”

“No, she didn’t. They actually joined forces to gang up on me.” He looks me in the eye. “You look lovely.”

I feel myself blush. “Thanks. You look overdressed.”

He laughs, shrugging from his suit jacket and rolling up his shirt sleeves. “I didn’t know Betty’s was so casual.”

“The apartment is . . . big.”

“Space is what you asked for,” he jokes. “I can always stop by if you get lonely.”

I smirk. “Nice try.”
