“I met with Hulk today,” he says, and my smile fades.

ANTON

She pales slightly at the mention of Hulk. “Don’t worry, he walked away breathing.” She visibly relaxes.

“What’s the catch?”

“The club has had to accept different terms to our agreement. Hulk is now working for me.”

“What?” she gasps.

“I like to keep my enemies close.”

“You’ll kill each other.”

“He’ll be working under me, my love. My own personal bitch.”

“What does Ace think about that?” she asks.

“It was his idea. That brings me to your parents. I thought we could go and speak to them together?”

She shakes her head. “No way.”

“I’m going to speak to them tomorrow anyway. If you join me, that’s up to you.”

“Why are you going to see them?”

“To put things right.”

She pinches the bridge of her nose. “You can’t just order them to accept this, Anton. They’re really upset.”

“You’re right, I can’t. But I can explain and let them decide what they accept. But either way, it won’t change the outcome.”

She smiles slightly. “Wow, is this a brand new you?”

“It’s the man I want to be,” I mutter. “The man I’ll try to be . . . for you.”

Our food arrives and I eye it suspiciously. I’ve had burgers before, but nothing that looks like the slop served before me. I watch in amusement as Piper digs in, closing her eyes in appreciation and making the small noises I love. She catches me watching and grabs a serviette to wipe her mouth. “What?” she asks, grinning.

I shake my head. “You love food,” I state. She stares down at the burger and her smile fades. I’m quick to grab her hand in mine to reassure her. “I mean it as a good thing,” I tell her. “I love it. The way you appreciate every mouthful makes me smile.”

She blushes slightly. “You’re not impressed with the burger?” she asks, nodding at my untouched food. I take a breath before picking it up and examining it. “The trick is not to think about it too much,” she says, looking amused. “Just stuff it in and enjoy.”

“Enjoy?” I repeat, looking bemused.

“I promise, it’s the best burger ever.” She watches as I take a bite, waiting for my reaction with anticipation. I arch a brow in surprise. “Good, right?” I nod. It actually tastes pretty good. “I told you. This place might not be all fancy-shmansy like the places you go, but Betty’s makes the best beef patties in the world.”

We finish the food, and when the bill comes, Piper snatches it up and rushes to the counter to pay, despite my objections. “You shouldn’t have paid,” I tell her as we step outside.

“I asked you on the date.”

“It was a date?”

“Our first official one,” she confirms, hooking her arm through my own.

Michael drives us back to Piper’s new place. We stop outside, and I turn to her. “I’ll text you?”

“You’re not coming inside?” she asks, looking disappointed.
