“Awful,” I agree.

“I didn’t deserve you.”

“Nope.” We both smile.

“For what it’s worth, I’m sorry for everything.”

“Me too,” I whisper.

He runs his thumb over my cheek. “You’re a wonderful woman. I missed out, and I’ll kick myself for the rest of my life.”

“You’ll find the one and you’ll just know she’s right for you,” I tell him. “I want you to be happy one day.”

He presses a gentle kiss to my mouth, and I close my eyes, savouring the moment. “I love you,” he whispers.

I smile, even though my eyes are filled with tears. “Goodnight.”

I go to my old room and fall into the made bed. The sheets smell fresh, and I wonder if Mum cleaned them just in case I returned. I drift off into a deep sleep, feeling relaxed and happy.

ANTON

I let myself into Piper’s apartment at midnight, waiting on her call that didn’t come. It’s almost ten a.m. when she makes an appearance.

She doesn’t spot me right away, kicking the door closed and dropping her keys in the dish nearby. She kicks off her shoes and dumps her bag then heads straight to the kitchen. I hear the kettle being filled, so I make my way to her, leaning against the door frame and watching as she adds sugar to an empty cup. “Late night?” I ask, and she drops the spoon, spinning to face me with panic on her face.

“Jesus, Anton. What the hell are you doing?”

“I was waiting for your call,” I say, looking at my watch. “It never came.”

She briefly closes her eyes. “Shit, I forgot. I fell asleep at the clubhouse. I’m sorry.”

“Was he there?”

“At the clubhouse? Yes.”

“In your bed?”

She rolls her eyes. “Not this again. I told you, there’s nothing between us anymore.”

“Did you talk to him?”

“Of course, I did. I spoke to lots of people, including my parents.”

Rage is fuelling me, and I can’t think straight. “Did he touch you?”

“In what way?” she asks, sighing.

I move closer, caging her in against the worktop. “Did any part of his body touch yours?”

“I’m not doing this, Anton,” she mutters, pushing me away and storming off to the living room.

I follow. “What happened?”

“You want to know every word, every touch?” she snaps.

“Why the fuck was he touching you?” I yell.

“If you must know, he apologised for treating me so poorly. It was a nice end to a wonderful evening.”
