He pats me roughly on the back. “Of course. Remember how I said I was planning to start that horse training venture? We’ve only been talking about it for ages, and since you have that handy business degree, you agreed to help me with a business plan.”

I nod slowly at first before more emphatically. “Oh, yes, of course. How could I have forgotten?”

I grasp his hand in mine until my mother glares at our clasped hands, and I quickly let go.

“We’ll just be in my room,” I say as I lead him upstairs.

“You leave that door open!”

I shoot wild eyes back at my mother. “Of course, mommy.”

She crosses her arms over her chest with the most mulish look, and a death glare that I could swear makes my heart palpitate.

Once we’re alone, I finally release my held breath. “Damn it, Caleb! I told you not to come here.”

He looks about as chagrined as anyone is capable. “I’m sorry, buttercup, I had no idea I’d be walking into… that.”

I sigh because how could he have known?

“It’s okay. I just wouldn’t make a habit of showing up on my doorstep.”

“Warning heard loud and clear. Plus, I don’t think I could survive another run in with your mother.”

I collapse on my bed. “Gah! This is so freaking embarrassing.”

The first real friend I make outside of school or work and this happens. I’m sure he’ll want nothing to do with me now.

I sit up on my elbows to find him hovering near my door.

“Listen, if you don’t want to take me anymore, I totally understand.”

He frowns for the first time since I met him as he saunters over and grabs my hand to pull me to my feet and into his arms. I sigh with so much pent up angst as I let it all go. I swear his hugs are life giving.

“You think you can get rid of me that easily? Think again buttercup.”

I smirk up at him. “What would I ever do without you?”

“Probably wither and die.” We laugh. “Now, let’s find you something cute and sexy.”

He drags me into my walk in closet. “I’m telling you there’s nothing in there.”

Then, like a bee to honey, he zeroes in on the one outfit in my closet that shows more skin than it covers. He raises it to his chest, his blue eyes sparkling. “You’ve been holding out on me.”

I shake my head. “No, absolutely not.”

He nods. “Yes, indeed. You’ll turn quite a few heads with this little number.”

???

The next evening, my parents believe I’ve taken up an extra shift at work. I’ve never lied to my parents before. I’ve always been too afraid of the repercussions, but now I have the drive to break every rule, and her name is Estrella.

I should probably be concerned that a woman I barely know has so much power over me, but considering I never felt an inkling of what I feel for her for anyone else, I’m not too worried about that.

Yet, after Caleb pulled up to the curb lined with a dozen cars, and I took in the huge Spanish style house, I’m not so sure.

I tug at the dark blue skirt that barely covers my ass. When I had worn the costume originally, it wasn’t as garish because I wore white leggings beneath. You should’ve heard how loud Caleb laughed when I suggested I do the same tonight.

He grabs the hand tugging at my skirt. “Leave it! You look so freaking hot! If I wasn’t taken and you were into dick, I’d be all over you.”
