She snorts, her expression tight with worry. “Aptly put. I know you're not okay, but are you back with me at least? Keep breathing, in and out."

I nod and follow her directions, forcing air into my lungs. Aurora takes my hand, helping to keep me grounded. It takes me a few minutes, but the ringing in my ears finally fades away and my pulse finally calms, leaving me wrung out and exhausted.

When the hell did I end up on the floor?

"Back with me?" Aurora asks.

I nod carefully. “Yeah. Sorry. And thank you."

"What the hell happened?"

I search the floor until I find the scattered papers and shove them towards her. She gathers them with a furrowed brow and I watch as rage takes over her face once she gets the gist.

She growls. “What the fuck?"

"Pretty much." I rub at my face.

She pulls out her phone. “Oh hell no. This is not happening. I'm calling Enzo, so he can handle this. Where are your boys?"

“They’re at Ryder’s with Lexie.”

"Okay, well, call them and let them know what's going on while I get Enzo over here."

I text them instead in the group chat, not having the energy to handle a phone call, not wanting them to hear the defeat in my voice.

At least this didn't happen while Lexie was here. I have time to pull myself together before she sees me. For now, I just don't have the energy to do more than sit on the floor and pick at the paint that's dried on my hands, barely listening as Aurora barks into her phone.

"Okay, he'll be here in five minutes. This is all bullshit. You have a slam dunk case against them, so don't you dare let those bastards get into your head with this nonsense."

I chuckle with no real humor. “They're alphas. Their word carries more weight than mine."

"True. But not in Neverwhere. This town is different. Outside of a few jackasses like the pricks on the Omega Council, people don't fall for all the designation role bullshit here. Oh, also, you're finally going to get to meet Rose and Trix. They're getting home tomorrow, so you'll have to come for dinner this week. And worst case, I'll set Trix on your exes and she'll bury them."

Her words pull a reluctant laugh out of me. "Believe me, I've been considering murder, the fuckers. What was I thinking, getting involved with them? I was such a fool."

"It's a rare person who doesn't have a regret or two in their past, especially when it comes to dating, but you got Lexie out of it, and she's pretty awesome."

"She is. I can't lose her." I squeeze my eyes shut tight.

"You're not going to lose her. On the off chance Enzo can't fix this legally, I've already gotten started on paperwork for you through the OFF."

I jerk my head up to stare at her. “What?"

She nods. “Yeah. We're not letting you lose her. I'm getting paperwork for your omega too. I've had the exact same escape plan in the works before, so I get it. Hopefully, like me, you won't end up needing it."

"I just don't understand. They didn't want us. Why do they now?"

She sighs. “Feral alphas don't really have a lot of logic. They run on nothing but emotions, typically possession, and our society does little to curb their bullshit. Alphas will be alphas and all that."

My face twists in disgust and she nods.

"Okay, let's get you off the floor and into a chair. That's going to be hell on your back." She holds her hand out for me to take.

As soon as I accept, she pulls me to my feet with surprising strength.

She laughs at the look of shock on my face. "I haul stacks and boxes of books around all the time, so I'm stronger than I look."

I jump when the door flies open, Hendrix and Jareth spilling inside, worry and rage on their faces. They barely acknowledge Aurora as they rush over to me, trapping me in between them. I breathe easier with them scent marking me, the aroma of sea salt, grass, mint, and sunshine filling my head.
