Chapter Eleven

Moira

––––––––

IDON'T SLEEP A WINKthe entire night, too busy obsessing, searching through old email accounts and paperwork, searching for the slightest sign they're telling the truth about looking for us and gathering every single bit of evidence they didn't.

There shouldn't be any issues with the legal side of things. I have multiple copies of the paperwork he signed giving up his rights and there's nothing in my emails showing a single attempt to get in touch before now. I'm still completely convinced they're lying. I just don't know why. And why now. What the hell caused them to suddenly want us if they have the omega they claimed to have?

I coat my face in a cooling cucumber gel to try to hide the evidence of my shitty night before I wake Lexie and get her ready for school. She chatters away, completely unaware anything is wrong, still riding high from a fun night. I'm so fucking grateful to Ryder and Hendrix for helping me. I owe them big.

Even more for Hendrix calling his lawyer friend and setting up a meeting as soon as I drop Lexie off.

I make sure to pack all the paperwork I gathered into my bag before taking her to school, leaving a sign on the door letting people know I'm opening late today. Thankfully I have nothing scheduled for the day other than open studio for drop-ins

Ryder's classroom is full with students and parents when we arrive, so we don't have a chance to interact much past exchanging strained smiles, his green eyes full of worry. I'm sure I'll end up with him and Hendrix both following me home later this afternoon, ready to hear the whole damn story.

Something I suppose I owe them after the way they stepped up without needing to know a thing past I needed help last night.

Hendrix is waiting for me outside the school. "Hey, Moira. How are you holding up?"

"I'm... I don't know." I huff out an edgy laugh.

He squeezes my shoulder with a commiserating smile. “Fair enough. Come on. Let's go talk to Enzo and see if he can help."

"Thank you so much for last night and for setting this up,” I say as I fall into step beside him.

Hendrix waves off my thanks. ”Of course. None of it was any trouble. we were happy to help."

"I'm still grateful."

"We'll get this figured out. We won't let you lose Lexie.”

"I'll do whatever it takes to make sure I don't."

Even if that ends up having to tie myself to a shitty pack I thought I escaped.

"Have you eaten?" Hendrix asks.

I shake my head. “My stomach can't handle it yet. Not until I've spoken to your lawyer friend."

He gestures for us to turn at the corner. “I’ll take you to breakfast after."

"Okay." The thought makes my stomach protest, but after a night of no sleep, I know I need to make sure I get the fuel I need today.

I can't get sick. Especially now. I can't afford the vulnerability.
