He nods. “Yes. The longer you can string them along, the better. It'll also show the judge, you did give them a chance instead of slamming the door on the option."

"What about Lexie? Do I have to let her meet them?" I really don’t want to.

They’ll get in her head and get her all twisted up, wanting what they offer. Then she’ll be crushed when they don’t follow through.

"Not yet. We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. You said they agreed to pretending to be old friends?"

"Yeah, but that doesn't mean they'll abide by that."

"Right. I need to ask..." Enzo trails off, looking pained.

My stomach flutters. “Yes?"

"How concerned for your safety do we need to be? Are they going to hurt you or Lexie? You made no mention of physical abuse."

I sigh, unsure how to answer. “They never did before, but I haven't seen them for six years and they always got whatever they wanted before. With distance, I've recognized how unhealthy the relationship was. How much they isolated me and controlled me. I don't want them to do the same to Lexie.”

And their energy is different now. Edgier. Wilder. Unpredictable.

Enzo winces. “It's possible if you'd stayed it would've gotten worse.”

Panic tightens my chest. ”They can't get their hands on her. I'll join another pack if I need to. I'll run, I'll do anything."

He nods. “I know. You're a good mother and Lexie is a sweet kid. We're not letting this happen, even if we have to get creative."

I sink back against the chair, his words bringing me some relief. “Thank you so much for helping. I don't know what I would do if I were trying to fight them alone."

"Well, now you don't have to worry about that. You've got people. Something they're going to soon learn, and it will hopefully help them make the right decision."

"I never fought them before, especially when they teamed up. I don't think they believe I'll do anything but leave my new life and do whatever they want, too grateful they want me back to have the slightest bit of self-respect." I shake my head in disgust.

Six years ago, that would probably be true.

"And we'll use that to our advantage. Now, expect my pack along with Hendrix and Ryder to stay close during all of this. And accept the help. None of us want to see you or your daughter hurt and we want to show those alphas that you aren't such an easy target. Let us."

I nod, finding no argument for that. “Okay. Fair enough."

"And stick to busy, crowded areas. Change up your routes and routines. You know the drill."

"I do."

"I'll get started on this right away and I'll stay in touch. You do the same." He hands me a card with his contact information on it. "The faster I get updates, the faster I can react to them."

I slide his card into my wallet. “I’ll keep you informed. And thank you again. I don't know how to repay you for this."

"You don't owe me shit. Taking apart alphas is one of my favorite things to do. It is my pleasure." His smile is almost feral.

I get what Aurora sees in him.
