Chapter Twelve

Ryder

MOIRA AND LEXIE DON'Tshow up to school the next day. It takes every inch of control I have to stay and teach instead of running out of there and making sure her exes didn't steal them away in the night.

Instead, I shoot Hendrix a text when she doesn't answer my frantic messages, letting him know since he has more freedom to go check on her.

We finally got the full story last night after her meeting with Enzo and after school once Lexie was upstairs taking a nap. I spent most of the night plotting ways to make her exes disappear.

For good.

I almost offered to form a pack with her, if it'll help, but I'm just a beta. There isn't a judge even in Neverwhere who'd believe I'm the better option. Hendrix would be the better option and I plan to talk to him about it when we have the time. Moira will hate it and I don't love the idea of forming a pack out of desperation, but I think all of us are willing to do whatever it takes to keep Lexie safe.

And based on how wonderful she smells to us, chemistry definitely isn't a problem. Not that chemistry is enough to build a relationship or pack, but it also doesn't hurt.

Before I met her, I didn't think I was anywhere near ready to try a relationship again, my dream of a pack gone along with the pack I was supposed to join. But as soon as I scented Moira and started getting to know her, watching her with her child, and now hearing everything she's overcome, something inside of me has started ticking, making me impatient, making we want to load up Moira and Lexie and move them into my house where they'll be safe.

The new security system I ordered for her studio should arrive today so I can get it set up and breathe a little better at the thought of them being there alone.

Since it's my property, she can't argue either, though I'm looking forward to seeing her try. I enjoy how independent and fierce she is. It's impressive as hell. And hot.

Though she's not so full of pride she won't accept help when it comes to her daughter. The thought of seeing either of their lights dim because of these two alphas determined to break what she's built makes me hot with rage.

She is so sweet and strong, a hard worker, and an amazing mother. How could they send her away when they had such a treasure?

Perhaps I should be grateful, since it brought her to us, but it still makes me murderous. The thought of her young and pregnant and on her own after they made her dependent on them makes my chest ache.

But she’s thriving now and I’ll do whatever it takes to make sure they can’t dim her light again.

ICURSE WHEN I FINALLYsee the missed messages on my phone. The damn woman wouldn't stop asking a million questions and telling me all her problems long enough for me to do anything other than nod so much I feel like a damn bobblehead.

With everything going on, I can't afford to do that anymore. Not until the threat has passed.

I yell at Jason that I'm leaving and to cover for me, not waiting for his response before I race out of there, my heart pounding heavy in my chest.

If those two alphas have done something to Moira and Lexie, I'll fucking kill them.

I message Ryder, letting him know I'm on the way. Thankfully she doesn't live far from the rec center, so I make it there fast.
