"Are there kids' basketball teams there?" I ask.

He chuckles, the sound low and raspy, sending a shiver zinging up and down my spine. "Oh yeah. That one is really popular."

I hold my cup up near my face, hoping to drown out his scent with my coffee. "How old do they have to be?"

"We have teams for as young as four or five."

"That is excellent news. My daughter will be thrilled." I can't wait to tell her.

Hopefully that will help soothe her if the day with Mr. Bouchard ends up terrible.

"Your daughter?" His glance is quick, but still obvious as he checks out my neck and my ring finger, looking for signs of possession.

I pretend not to notice. I may enjoy the way this alpha looks and smells, but that's as far as it'll go. He's just a lovely painting I can appreciate, but never afford.

"Yes. She's recently discovered an obsession with the sport, and I promised her I'd look into it for her."

"Did your pack just move here?" He gives up on subtlety, a smirk on his face that shows he's in on the joke.

It really is too bad he's an alpha.

I sigh, feeling no need to lie. "No pack. It's just the two of us, but we did."

His grin is almost blinding. "Welcome to town then. And bring her over anytime, we'll get her on a team. I'll definitely come to your opening for more information. I think this is going to be a great addition to our town."

"Thank you. Neverwhere may have a bit of an ominous name, but it's been mostly a really welcoming place."

He cocks a brow. "Mostly?"

"Well, no town is perfect, right?"

He laughs. "I suppose that's true."

I need to get away from this alpha. He smells too good and his energy is too calming. He's putting me at ease and that's not something I want to feel around an alpha. I can't let my guard down. Especially not now that everything is finally coming together.

I force a strained, but polite smile. "Well, I need to head out and pick up my daughter from school. But I'll definitely check out the center for her and look forward to you coming to the opening. I'll see you around."

"See you around." Somehow he makes his words sound like a promise.

I shiver and turn away from him, reminding myself that alphas are not for me.

With only an hour left before Lexie needs to be picked up, I make my escape, plenty of flyers still clutched in my hands. I'll have to spread them out around town more another day. Right now, I need to get away from that alpha and his scent and clear my head.

I've really got to find a yoga class. And not one at the rec center.
