Chapter Four

Moira

––––––––

I'M AS CALM AS I CANbe after a hurried meditation moment back at my studio when I arrive at the school to pick up Lexie. I slip through the loud cacophony of children as they spill out into the halls, heading for the buses outside. The extreme scents irritate my senses and I'm only a beta. I don't know how alphas or omegas can handle it here when it's this overwhelming for me.

The classroom door is open when I arrive, so I slip inside.

Lexie looks up as soon I step through the doorway and her face lights up. "Mama!"

She jumps up from her seat and races over to me, throwing herself in my arms, sending me back a couple steps as I steady her against me.

I chuckle and hold her tight, my eyes closed as I breathe her in. "Hey, darling. I missed you today."

She squeezes me hard, stealing my breath with her tiny arms digging into my lungs. "I missed you too."

I drop a kiss on the top of her head. "Did you have fun?"

She steps back and beams up at me. "I did. It was awesome."

Relief and a little bit of sadness swirl in my chest. "That's wonderful. Ready to go? I have a couple surprises for you."

"Yeah, I'm ready. Just one more thing before we go."

"Okay."

Lexie darts back to her desk to grab her bag before she trots up the aisle to the desk where her teacher stands, speaking to a parent.

Lexie waits patiently as he finishes up his conversation, but he doesn't make her wait long.

“Lexie? Is everything all right?" Bouchard’s expression is so kind and patient, nothing like the grumpy man who stormed into my studio and looked at it like it was used gum stuck to the bottom of his shoe.

Maybe this is his twin? It's the only thing that makes sense. Though twins don't usually smell the same.

"Yes, I just wanted to thank you for class today. I had a really good time."

Pride swells in my chest for this tiny human I love more than anything else in the world.

He visibly melts at her sweet politeness. "You're welcome. I'm glad you joined my class. You had so many great questions. I can't wait for more tomorrow."

"Me too. Bye, Mr. Bouchard." She waves over her shoulder as she bounces back over to me.

He smiles and waves after her. “Goodbye."

I refuse to meet his green gaze, keeping my attention on Lexie, but seeing that interaction relieves most of my concern about her in this class. It appears he won't hold being my child against her, treating her just as kindly as everyone else if she already likes him so much.

I slip my arm across her shoulders as I lead her from the classroom and through the halls back outside, smiling as she chatters, telling me all about her day.

Her excitement makes missing her throughout the day worth it. She's needed this. She needs to make friends and to have a place where her unquenchable thirst for knowledge can be sated. Thankfully her teacher doesn't seem to have a problem with her curiosity and acted happy to answer her questions.
